Attendance numbers are down all over the board with college sports if I recall correctly. Some schools have really fallen off of the map with support. I hope ISU never gets as bad as some of these schools. Even in the dreadful McDermott era, there were crowds that would blow so many other schools out of the water today. I blame HD television.

I don't see where people get the idea that people are falling over themselves to get to these games.

I have been to every B12 arena outside of WVU. Only Iowa State and KU sell out. KSU gets about 70-80%, OU is usually 1/2 to 2/3 full but selling out some games this year ( which is great to see), but the rest of the schools are about 1/2 to 1/3 full. Crazy. Texas Tech holds more than Hilton, but the bottom ring was half full and entire upper deck closed and not a soul up there.

We we have something special at Hilton.

Who wants to see iowa vs. Penn State? That game has no juice, the teams have no natural rivalry and it shouldn't have been a game at all. I wouldn't go to that game if I had free tickets.

Baylor ticks me off more than any other school. They have a football team that is fun to watch and has been consistently in the top 10 for years and a BCS appearance yet only 10 fans showed up for their bowl games. If that was ISU we would have flooded those bowls with fans. They have a basketball team that has been top 25 for years. Nobody cares. A womens bball team thats contending for NC's. Who watches? Nobody. I have no idea how they recruit anyone with 0 fans to watch them.

If ISU performed like they did people's heads would explode.

People don't understand Baylor, Northwestern, etc are smaller private universities

No bandwagon fanbase, alumni spread out all over the country .. Hence. The smaller crowds

First of all it's not “Hilton Magic”. Second the economy sucks and people just can't afford a lot of these games. Iowa's economy is fantastic compared to other parts of the country.

There are many factors that play into these empty arenas, but cost is probably the least. It's quite affordable to get into these games where half the arena is empty....

The only reason to watch it would be to see Iowa get beat.

On the KXNO Hawkeye show last night they spend a good amount of time making excuses to why people are not showing up for Iowa basketball games. Iowa fans sure can come up with a lot of reasons not to watch their team play.

The attendance numbers posted are based on tickets sold. That being said, I can remember times (Mac and early Fred) when the actual attendance was pretty low. $99 seats covered a pretty good area to help bolster ticket sales. Bad basketball does not get any fan base fired up.
