One of my favorite stories of Larry was Mike Henderson's recruitment. Mike was the Waterloo East kid that played ball with Milan Moses in high school. One of the bigger recruits in the state. All indication pointed to Mike playing for ISU, and if I remember correctly, he'd even committed. The story out of the basketball offices went that Mike showed up for a meeting with Larry with his friend Carlton Reed (also ended up being a hawkeye and panther) in tow. Carlton tried to big-time the entire basketball staff, acting like the second coming of Michael Jordon, and Mike thought it was hilarious. Mike told Larry (the word used by my friends in the office was "demanded") that Carlton get a scholarship, too, when Reed graduated, and Larry got so mad that he threw both of them out of his office. He never bothered to pull his scholarship, because Mike quickly "reopened" his recruitment and picked the Hawks.

It's funny how several people have commented that they're glad "we're no longer playing that style of bball." I think you need to go watch some replays of LE's teams, especially with Tinsley. (Check out the UCLA Sweet 16 game). While we may not have played with the pace we do now, we were still no where near the Wisconsin style of play either.

Mike Henderson, otherwise known as PG #35, couldn't make a jumper to save his life in NCAA March Madness 06. Maybe we dodged a bullet there.

Ya we're never going to have Jamaal again though. JT pretty much forced LE's hand. LE would allow NO ONE else to play defense like that and stay on the floor.

Wasn't Reed the higher rated of the two? He never panned out in college but it's not like he just wanted his random friend to have a scholarship offer too.

Not even close. Henderson was #140 or 150 in his class, Reed wasn't rated.

Reed broke both feet twice. Showed flashes of being a really good player after he transferred to UNI, but just couldn't stay on the floor. Would have made the team before the Sweet 16 a real tournament threat rather than a first round loser.

I've mentioned it before, but Larry never took advantage of ISU's success because he was so used to shopping the scratch and dent aisle. Instead of going after more top 100 kids, he continued to look for the lightly recruited kid. That said, it would have been interesting to see what he and Morgan did with more time together. Wayne had already brought in Stinson and Blaylock at that time. A couple more years, he might have really pulled in some talent. Or gotten ISU in trouble with the NCAA.

The quote about Alford not feeling loved in Iowa and not knowing why? Steve, we all know we don't like you here in Iowa.

Wasn't Tinsley a pretty solid defender? Got plenty of steals at least. It's been a while...

Larry never took advantage of the success because he had three assistants leave for HC jobs the next two years. Larry was never a recruiter, so losing those assistants was a death knell to recruiting. It finally turned around when Morgan was hired as lead recruiter, but by then it was too late.

I love Larry, and was firmly against his firing. That said you can't bring him back now. Also his philosophy really wouldn't fit the world today.

I think all defense is going to suffer this year do the rule changes. One of two things is going to happen, either kids are going to foul out at unusual rate, or FG attempts are going to go up significantly. Hopefully our guys are able to adjust and keep their hands off of their man.

The story was good until I read this :but I’ve talk to (former Iowa coach) Steve Alford about it. He doesn’t feel warmly received in Iowa. Why? I don’t know.â€￾

Wisconsin was one of the most efficient offensive teams in the country last year IIRC, and is looking for something like their 15th year in a row of making it to the NCAA's. I don't care what style it is...I'd take it.

The problem I always had with the Eustachy years, was that it always seemed like recruits would commit to Iowa State, and then find a reason to declare for the NBA draft. So the number of players able to play was always a question. Perhaps this was a symptom of Eustachy's drinking? Or a symptom of those days where a lot of kids out of high school were getting serious looks from the NBA. Anyhow, I'm glad Larry has found a comfortable place. I hope we can find comfort with Prohm.
