This is probably a long shot but Someone on here may know, may have had them or may at least know what I am talking about.

There is an item I food item I used to get as a child from a local mom and pop drive-inn that I have never been able to remember what it was called, or ever find or even hear of anywhere. It has been one of those things that has always bugged me and have randomly searched for it for years. Just to find out more about what it was and if there is anything like them today.

This was a small town mom and pop type drive-inn. They were independent and not franchised with anyone. They would have gotten their food from an area food distribution place that distributed to bars, restaurants and other vendors not affiliated with franchises. So these could have been available at a number of places around Iowa, and the US for that matter.

Here is what I remember them as:
They were a side dish type item.
I remember them as multi colored chips of some sort. I remember them as similar texture to a bubbly corn chip. My sister remembers them as similar texture to Pork rinds. But were Red, Green, Blue, Yellow etc.
I believe they were deep fried, they came hot, (sizzling if I remember correctly), and for some reason I feel like they even crackled in some way in your mouth, almost like pop rocks, but not exactly in that way, just kind of a similar feel.
My sister remembers them as being multi flavored like bacon, etc. I don't remember that for sure.
They were my favorite thing to order, but I was pretty young, then they became unavailable. Whether the place stopped getting them or the place they ordered their food from no longer sold them. I don't know. That Drive Inn changed owners a couple times over the years and finally was closed and torn down.

Just wondering if anyone else remembers these things, or has any idea what they might be? I know its a total random question on here, but I am guessing they may have been something distributed to other Iowa restaurants as well in the 70s and 80s, so this might be somewhere someone else might remember them.

I hope the OP finds what they're looking for. I also think I need to try these so called shrimp chips.
We went to a Thai restaurant in Portland, Oregon that served fish sauce chicken wings and freshly made shrimp chips (among other things)

The wings were life changing. The shrimp chips... not so much

Hmm i dont think those are it. They look maybe a bit similar, but the ones I am talking about were Dark colors, Dark blue, red, green, blue, etc.

And I doubt they were prawn, or asian type food, this would have been long before that type of food hit rural Iowa.

Wherever I go, there I am.
I don't know the item, but I know the drive through you're referring to (Tardy Turtle I assume) and man, I loved the butterscotch malts there when I was little (very late 80's).
Long live the Turtle!!! (The Turtle is dead). Many good malts were consumed there by young Lawman.

Won't say what town it was located in though, because an infamous Cave poster includes it in his name.

That's what I meant to type but got autocorrected. Those wings are amazing
Yeah, they were flat out incredible. I tried to make them at home, using a copycat recipe. I don't think I have ever failed anything so hard.
