Flying Cheap

I know a lot of people on here do a ton of travel, so I was hoping to get some ideas.

My wife and I are going to Japan next spring. We don't know the exact dates yet, but do know the things we'd like to do there and some ins and outs of travel once we get there.

What I'm hoping to find out, are there tricks to getting more affordable overseas flights? That seems to be the one place that we can't find a way to save some money. We're not trying to be cheap, just money conscious.

The searches we've been doing, day of departure makes some difference, being willing to be on a 30 hour flight with layovers (we aren't) makes some difference, but nothing that puts a major dent in it.

Thanks in advance.

I too am planning a trip to Japan next spring. I've set alerts on both Google Flights and Kayak. Seem like Kayak was limiting some of the options but still had some really good prices.

If you are a responsible spender, get an airline credit card with a good promo. Airlines routinely run promos where if you spend $3000 in the first 3 months of opening the card, you get 50,000 miles. You and your wife can get the card to get 100,000 miles between you both. That at the very least should significantly discount your flight and maybe if you pick an off peak day, maybe the flights will be free.

To get your $3,000 spend easy, just buy $500 netspend cards at HyVee and use it to pay off your balance.
