The "best steak in Ames area" thread got me thinking about the best food locally. My input in that thread (Django's steak frites selections) is probably my favorite meal in all of central Iowa.

If you could go to any restaurant in your given location and could get one dish free of charge, what dish would it be, and where? What sides, etc.?

That's tough. My go to is prime rib at The Chicago Speakeasy in DSM. It's an old school place and the salad bar brings out the small town Iowa nostalgia that I still appreciate. One of the best PR's in the metro and very fairly priced.

801 Chophouse

Ribeye
Garlic Mashed Potatoes
Baked Cream Spinach

I was there twice for business functions where I didn't have to pay. Best ribeye I ever had. Seasoned perfectly.

My ideal dinner at 801 is a NY strip (of which I can only ever eat about 1/3), boursin mashed potatoes, and asparagus. So very similar to you!

The vixen and I have a favorite Mexican place we go to fairly often (2-3 times a month). They have a dish called Pollo Asado that is heavenly.....and Raul's refried beans are the best I've ever had. (I could just sit with a cold Corona and a bowl of chips and beans and pig out.

(EDIT: It is called Hacienda Vieja, and they have opened one in Grimes, right west of the McDonalds in that strip mall.)

Love 801. So thrilled when they opened a location here in Denver.

Two taco lunch at Malo downtown. Chiken Tinga and carnitas. Side of their rice.

Also have to get the tot-chos for the appetizer.

Unfortunately I can't get mine anymore because the establishment is no longer open, but Cafe Shi, in North Ames, had a Kentucky Hot Brown that would occasionally appear on their menu, and it was magical. Didn't need any sides. Just the entree.

Lost but not forgotten for me:

Dim sum at this little Golden Valley strip mall chinese place - closed and gone :(
Spring rolls at this little Vietnamese joint in dwtn Mpls - closed and gone :(
Curry chicken at this little joint in dwtn St. Paul - closed and gone :(
The assorted soups* at Eddingtons in dwtn St. Paul - closed and gone :(

* chicken chili, regular chili, beef stew, classic chicken noodle, like eight varieties a day.

Their yellow curry used to have the top spot in my heart in central Iowa. :(

Greenbriar's Gunpowered Prime rib with smashed potatoes. Its a special once in a while and delicious, otherwise if its not the special the gunpowered ribeye.
