Didn't really think Galveston was that great when we briefly visited for the Houston Bowl, but bring me back some Pappasito's! It's a TexMex chain down there but they have amazing fajitas and fresh made tortillas. Get the garlic butter sauce to go with it too.

I read this book recently.

When I was a kid we had a very old hardcover book of similar tales. Called the "Great Galveston Disaster" Included page after page of very graphic photographs of dead people, animals and body parts. Horribly fascinating for a very young person. But memorable. Always interesting (to me) to read about disaster situations and how people deal with them and survive (or don't) and the mistakes made that could have saved lives...

My oldest daughter lives outside of Houston and I have been to Galveston several times. Absolutely nothing at all sticks out to me as an enjoyable place to go. Crowded, dirty and hot. I just go because there's a little bar there that has killer Bloody Mary's.

I'm guessing the only thing to do in Galveston is to become a cross dresser, rent an apartment, kill your neighbor, dump their dismembered body in the gulf, and get acquitted by hiring a high profile lawyer. At least that's what the NYC millionaires do on their Galveston vacations. :wideeyed:

Son has been there, I have not. He mentioned the beach, the Texas Seaport Museum (similar to Ellis island), and the state park on Galveston Island.

There's a decommissioned offshore oil drilling rig there turned into a museum that's kind of unique.

I believe there are several historic houses that offer tours if you're into that sort of thing. I believe we toured the Moody Mansion and from what I remember it was good/interesting.

The ferry that goes from Galveston to Port Bolivar is free and maybe worth checking out.

I was there in early April so at that point the beach wasn't real crowded or dirty. I'm guessing summer may be a completely different animal. I was only there for about a day and a half but don't remember any bars or restaurants being particularly remarkable.

I've only spent a couple days there during college. We picked up a friend who was going to A&M Galveston on our way to South Padre. I am not sure if it was just the part of Galveston we were in but that place seemed like a **** hole. This was also many years ago, as well.
