This ain't yer father's Oldsmobile.

I hope you're right, but the Rhoads era shows otherwise (so far). Mizzou last year, Oklahoma in 2010, and Iowa in 2009. ISU was blasted from the start in all three.

Tulsa - W - This game will be scary at times being the first game of the season. In all I really don't expect it to be that close. Stupid mistakes will keep the score tight throughout though. Tulsa Defense will be their downfall. Cyclones will have one of the best defenses in the Big 12 this season, Tulsa will score points but it won't be the cake walk they are use to. Remember that this is week 1 road game for them so they will be making mistakes too.

@ Iowa - W - I'm actually on the fence with this one. I think ISU is the better football team going into this game. With it being in Iowa City though anything can happen.

Western Ill - W - This will be a bit of a snooze. Sorry Western Ill, but if you win this game it is going to be a sign of bad bad things to come.

TT - W - For the first time since 2000, ISU will start 4-0. You might think Tubs is gong to have a better team this year, but lets face it, Rhoads has Techs number. Our strong option running game Tech can't stop and our defense is ideal against offences like Tech. Lets face it, Rhoads has out scored his old boss 93-45 in two years, can Tech really beat us at home?

@TCU - L - I actually think we have a better shot at them then most will give us credit for. I think playing in a new environment on the road will just be too much.

Kansas St - W - About time this is in Ames. These teams are so close, really they are very similar and we have seen on the field very competitive games over the last three years or so. Home field plays a factor and the old man from purple Kansas has another lost to add to his lonely defeat colum.

@ OSU - L - OSU is going to have a down year. I know I say that every year but they have to have one with some of the loses they had. I'm expecting about a 8 win season for them and they will get one of them against us. I don't think we will play well against them and this game will take some enthusiasm out of Cyclone fans after a 5-1 start.

Baylor - W- This game scares me too because it reminds me of 2005. We know Baylor has enough pieces to do it, I do think though they will be taking a big step back with out Griffin. We saw what happened in 09 when he went out with a injury, the team just wasn't the same. Clones win a close one.

Oklahoma - L - I want this to be a win so bad and if Rhoads gets an upset I think this will be a dossy. I just don't see it happening. Oh, how I wish we played bye in the previous week.

@ Texas - L - I know we did it before and I don't think Texas is going to be unbeatable this season but Texas will be improved over last season and this will be on the road.

@Kanas - W - Interested to see if Kansas makes any improvement...not sure it will be enough considering how far down they went.

West Virginia - W - I know I'm going to be in the minority, but I don't think WV is going to have a good year, not by their standards at least. Just like TCU, they have to adjust to having to face high quality teams on a weekly basis. There will be a lot of injuries for those two clubs. Lets be honest, we did not play well against UConn, but we still won on the road. UConn was 6th in the Big East but lost four games by less than a touchdown last year. If they could have pulled out even two of those games they could have tied for the BigEast title. We won more games than UConn last year and if we would have had two more wins we would have been in the middle of the conference with Missouri who didn't even get a conference bowl game.

It was 7-3 Iowa with 3 minutes left in the first half, with Iowa's TD coming after a failed on-side kick by ISU.

I don't understand how everyone doesn't expect at least 6-6. This isn't the Cyclones of old, CPR is a better coach than you are giving him credit for and there is way too much talent and depth(compared to normal) on this team. We can beat anybody we play, including Oklahoma, Texas, and WVU. I'm pretty confident we pull at least one of those upsets too. I think and hope Iowa State wins 8 this year.

This is what I posted on WRNL:

Tulsa, W. 32-18. Cody Green was terrible against with NFL running backs and WRs at his disposal as a Husker. I expect more of the same. Also, Paul Rhoads is currently undefeated against non-BCS opponents (albeit barely).

@Iowa, W. 24-14. We steal one in IC. Iowa's offense will be wildly one-dimensional, and doesn't really have a strength. Their inexperienced front 7 gets mauled by our O-line, much like last year, and we have a big day running the ball and playing keep-away.

WIU, W. 32-10. Rhoads just doesn't clobber inferior opponents, unless its TTU.

TTU, W. 45-32. I see no reason to think TTU beats us in Ames. We will run the ball down their throats for the third straight year, as Tubberville begins his Big 12 Farewell Tour.

@TCU, L. 32-21. The first Big 12 game in the newly rennovated Amon G. Carter stadium will yield an electric home atmosphere, and Casey Pachall + Gary Patterson's defensive wizardry prove to be too much for the Clones.

KSU, W. 21-18. A very similar looking game to last year, but this year, Collin Klein is figured out. Jack Trice is an absolute snake pit for this game, and Rhoads FINALLY gets Snyder after 3 straight heartbreakers outside of Ames.

@OSU, L. 38-28. We hang with OSU, but they will be too motivated, and Joseph Randle proves to be too much for the Clones. We make Wes Lunt look like a Heisman candidate, and they get some measure of revenge.

Baylor, W. 32-21. Baylor is not ready to reload. They lose everyone who produced for them offensively, and return a poor defense. The fact that the game is in Ames bodes well for the Cyclones.

OU, W. 24-18. The Paul Rhoads Upset Special of 2012. Jack Trice is absolutely electric for a beautiful late fall 2:30 nationally televised that showcases the upstart ISU squad taking on a lagging OU squad that suffers from a lack of explosive skill players. The crowd storms the field, as Rhoads knocks the 500 lb gorilla off the program's back.

UT, L. 21-10. The best defense in the conference mauls us into submission as our bubble quickly deflates in a classic let down game. Texas scores a defensive TD, and gets another off of great field position due to a Steele Jantz/James White botched zone read.

KU, L. 21-7. Every year we come out incredibly flat in a game that we could win. Lawrence has been a house of horrors for us. This game has "trap" written all over it, as hype begins to build for Black Friday and Riot Bowl I. Whoever wins the QB battle absolutely wets the bed.

WVU, L. 49-48, OT. We take the conference-leading Mountaineers to OT in front of a wild Jack Trice Stadium, and lose going for the win. A great opportunity was missed, but its hard to be angry after a great effort by an out-gunned squad.

Final Record: 7-5 (4-5)

Because of the schedule. You cannot compare it to normal (as in previous ISU squads), you compare it to your opponents. In a league full of 7+ wins quality of teams, some teams are not going to finish with 7+ wins. I agree, we CAN beat anyone. However, even if you assume every game outside of W. IL, and KU are toss ups, and we split them, that still only gets you to 7-5 with no room for being upset.

With a Big 10 type-schedule, I think we have the roster to win 8 games, and good QB play away from more. With our schedule, you have to be perfect in the games you "should" win, win more than 50% of the toss-ups, and have an upset or two. That is a tough order.

Minimum expectation of 6-6 is there for the taking, no doubt. If many of the near-toss-up games go the wrong way, finishing worse than that is possible, sure.

But this team has plenty of talent and experience returning, this is Rhoads' fourth season and groundwork has been laid, his first 3 teams have shown there's potential to get unexpected wins. Schedule is tough, but not more so than 2011 — getting Tech, KSU and Baylor at home, plus OU and WVa (which I'd chalk up losses on the road).

Mainly, getting six wins from among these doesn't seem too much to ask:
Tulsa
Iowa
W Ill
Tech
TCU
KSU
Baylor
KU

This shows how little knowledge you really have. You probably come from the same group of Iowa fans that think Iowa is going 10-2.

Tulsa - W A much aniticpated Cyclones squad starts off the season by making the "experts" looking foolish by making them an underdog against a clearly inferior opponent.

Iowa - W The Cyclone won't actually be motivated to win this game to make up for the string of indignaties I've suffered over the course of the last three ('06 had "Suck-clones" yelled in my ear all day and nearly got hit by a beer, '08 had the "away game trip from hell" as part of the band, '10 had to do the walk of shame past a group of drunk Iowa fans at a Wisconsin Dells sports bar), but I will pretend that Rhoads and Co. actually care about any of this and it will make me happy.

W. Illinois - W They will be the Brooklyn Brawler to our Undertaker. Enough Said.
Texas Tech - W Another decisive win over the Raiders will give rise to the conspiracy theory that ISU is actually footing part of the bill for Tuberville's contract.

TCU - L TCU will be pumped for their first Big 12 home opener, and quite frankly I don't think ISU is allowed to be successful enough to start 5-0.

K-State - W I will grudgingly miss this game for a wedding and use my yearly "Completely miss a significant Cyclone victory" guaranteed win (Nebraska '09, Texas '10, TTech '11).Okie State - L I think we almost owe it to them to let them have their revenge win this year. Wouldn't mind giving them a scare though and plant a few more rivalry seeds though.

Baylor - W The Cyclones have never lost a game when I have participated in the Alumni marching band. Coincidence? Most definitely, but I still think we beat the Griffin-less bears this year.

Oklahoma - W Part of this is the Paul Rhoads special. Part of this is that I plan on taking my dad and I really want to believe the universe is kind enough to me to let us see something that cool together.

Texas - L Texas has to be back one of these years, right?

Kansas - W I refuse to be scared of this game. We should win, we will win.

West Virginia - L Unfortunately I think this season goes down like I described I think Rhoads will have ran out of magic dust for the season by time WVU rolls into town. I do think we could still give the crowd an instant classic in a losing effort though, a la Nebraska '10.

Final: 8-4 (5-4 Big 12)
