I think we tried that once last year in the hurry up before half and went through them like a hot knife through butter. The rest of the game was CMC trying to out Kirk-Kirk.

Maybe CMC is afraid of the quick 3 and outs might get the defense a little tired. IMO with the way the Iowa offense looked I would take my chances. Because you try and grind it out against Iowa......that's exactly what they want. And CMC should know that by now.

We have played that style because that’s how the offense was built. Our strengths were RB and TE. Our QB didn’t have a big arm.

Two of his six incomplete passes could have been caught. Wouldn't have been easy catches but the ball was right where it needed to be.
One of them would have been a ~15 pass to Hutch who had to jump in stride but was essentially wide open. Can’t hold it against X as he was dominant today but I was a bit shocked he missed that one.

You come to this conclusion based on CMC not asking a true freshman to try a fifty yarder in the first half of his very first game…when we’re having no trouble scoring points?

Because I didn’t see any other times a FG was a serious option.

I think the small issues Cooper had as a starter had more to do with Verdon being dinged up and not playing than McDonald’s absence. And in the long run, we’ll come out ahead. He looked really, really good.

Young we did not miss whatsoever. We had enough coverage issues as it was—and at least those are correctable.
I'm basing it off the commentators saying we had three FG kickers but it wasn't decided who was going to be the starter (or some comment like that).

Maybe they were wrong on that, but it didn't sound good (made it sound like the coaches did not have much confidence in that department).

I'd like to be wrong there and hope we have like the next "Justin Tucker" lol

I was actually impressed with SEMOs QB. He made most of the throws he needed to and scrambled out of a lot of pressure. Our defense was keeping everything in front of them and allowing a lot underneath and their QB took what the defense was giving them and making all of his throws. Honestly he looked way better than Petras. Petras routinely misses open receivers and is a statue in the pocket. I think SEMOs QB was a tougher matchup honestly.

The staff has said that Gilbert may be the most talented leg they have had in the program, but he is just a freshman. CMC will put him in situations where he can be successful.

Anyone see a guy wearing a hawk hat yesterday? I saw him around section 12-14 down by the field.

yes, you are right, it shouldn't be all on Brock as our special teams have sucked in the last two meetings as well. I wasn't trying to put it all on him, just pointing out that he has made a lot of mistakes against Iowa.
I understand, but could you see how a QB might feel he has to press given this context? He did make some mistakes, among a lot of others around him.

My thoughts

Dekkers played as good as could have been expected for his fist start. Really good showing. Guy may be our next star.

OL was the best it has been in awhile. We can build on this. ESPN stats showed no sacks, no QB hurries. Starting RB gained over 100 yards. A couple of Brock’s runs had O-linemen getting to the second level. Looked promising.

Brock had so much more energy in the second half. Exciting to see. RB depth is good and young guys will get better will opportunities.

X was great. Staff made an effort to get Noel involved but WR blocking needs to be better on screens. I’m excited for Stanley to get more opportunities. This group could be really good.

TEs made a couple catches which was good considering the lack of experience.

DL was solid. Didn’t allow their RB any room. Will was double teamed and held all game. No sacks, but lots of hurries by the group. We will see if we bring a LB more against Iowa.

LBs we’re solid. I thought Reeder was really good in his first game. Need more big plays from this group.

DBs showed that we have a lot of talent. This group will be really good when we get experience, but it may be a little scary at times until then. This may be the most athletic group we have ever had. The cushion we gave SEMO at the beginning of the game is Hancock’s MO. Unknown QB, make him prove he can be patient and drive the length of the field. Nothing new.

A few random thoughts from the Jack:

- Turf looked good
- Late arriving crowd had me nervous, but filled into 90%(?)
- Crowd was into it earlier, but got understandably quieter later
- The bridge was good looking, especially lit up, and useful!
- SEMO OLine were big boys and doubled and held Will a lot
- So strange without Purdy, Hall, Kolar, etc.
- Great to see Hall, Kolar and Montgomery at the game
- Our younger team looked smaller than the last couple of years
- I needed a program, especially for new starters, # change & late subs
- Dekkers looked good, I thought he was elusive using his strength
- He looks effortless throwing the ball
- Different elusiveness as Purdy, as well as diff gunslinger mentality
- I have enough stress, it was nice to enjoy a relaxing game
- Hot and you had better have worn sunscreen!
- Great neighbors at our tailgate, as usual
- All the dogs at the tailgates make me nervous in that heat
- A shower never felt better

That is my biggest concern and something I noticed immediately. Between Enyi, Rose, Hummel, and I. Young, we were much more developed physically in recent years. Reeder has good size and activity, but our depth at LB did not look like Big 12 players. I know we recruit a little differently at that position, but LB is a major issue. Vance is overrated by fans and the media. He's usually in decent position, but he doesn't make many plays. Playing a 260 lb linebacker is dumb.

Just shy of 58,000 they said. Which coincides with my estimate of 95%

I just tried to watch a youtube replay from the ESPN + feed, and it was so choppy. Not sure how anybody can stand to watch a full ESPN + game. Yikes!

Got home a while ago and watching it now with no issues. It may be your Wi-Fi. My biggest complaint re: ESPN+ is that it doesnt keep you logged in like other streaming apps and you have to use an activation code too. I wish it had a favorite teams function too, so that ISU content surfaced.

The reserves at linebacker are a little undersized because they’re all in their first or second year, as redshirt freshmen, a JC soph and a true freshman.

That said, McLaughlin is the same size Rose was playing Mike as a true freshman.

(Hunter Zenzen moved to DE, he played there late in the game. No idea about Cole Pedersen)

Yep. So hard to dig around and find the games I want once they’re archived. And not always that easy when they’re live.
