I have watched the show since the very first episode, along with the Dirt. He has said countless times some of his attitude is generated by the show.

That's an amazing stretch to "actor". No one would act the same if there was a camera crew following you around.

If anyone watches this show. Tonight was gut wrenching. Watching parkers grandpa with so much pride in his grandkids and family. Knowing that he is going to die soon. That show got to me.

Same here, especially because I kept thinking that they'd end the show saying that he passed away in the last few months before the episode aired or something like that.

They have to make it. They have been gold mining up that way for years. Like Tony the scruffy haired bearded guy. He was doing it before a tv show was there and was making it. So I am not sure why some of you think you can't make it. They know what they are doing. Well Hoffman does not but Parker has been mining for years even though he is 19 years old. I think the biggest problem is people who watch the show who think they can do it because they have been watching it. Then go up there and fail miserably because they have no idea what they are doing.

BTW Hoffman started the show. He brought the show to the producers and explained that him and his old man are going to give it a go. The only way Parker got on the show was because Hoffman had to ask him how to do pretty much everything the first season and Parker was mining at Big Nugget across the river.

Tony has a massive plant and I'm sure they run thousands of yards of dirt. Having a claim that actually has gold in it would be a huge plus also. Always amazed at how much dirt mines have to run to get gold, copper, diamonds or any precious metal. Tons and tons or worthless dirt to just get a few ounces of what gets you paid.

He has even tweeted about how people should not get so caught up in his personality since it is a reality show. The guy is a gold miner and actor.

It's like any business with a high entry barrier. You don't make money for a few years, but if you can make enough to get past those intial costs there's room for profit. When you're talking about that much money it doesn't take much of a profit margin for everyone to make money.

I used to watch this show religiously the first couple of seasons. Ever since Todd and crew went to South America, I haven't really followed as closely. I'll catch a show every now and again, but won't go out of my way to watch it.

Same here. Then every episode started to repeat itself. Getting the site and equipment set up and running. The equipment breaks down. Money and investment snags. Equipment back running with 10 minutes left in show. Todd saying for the millionth time. This is it where going to hit gold this time. End of show....and repeat.

The show is not scripted but the statement "Figures don't lie but liars can figure." is the key to understanding perceptions. The film crew shoots at least 10 times the footage that they show. By showing bits and pieces out of context they can build perceptions that are misleading. I'm also sure that the producers try to lead or goad the participants into saying snippets that can be used to enhance the image the producers want.

I don't want this thread to go to the cave so I'll just say that this practice is understandable for entertainment purposes.

Also, if you ever watch the behind the scenes stuff on any of these shows they are quick to tell you that they do a lot of things twice so that the cameras can catch a better angle. Like every show the producers want to have heroes and villains. I'm sure the people who are on the show know that and play to it. I doubt they are reading lines from a ******, but for example in Season 2 Dakota Fred knew he was supposed to be the "villain" of the show whether he was truly a villain or not.

Kind of wonder what the other crews make? Todd and dad make the big money. What do Dakota Fred and Parker get from Discovery?

Why was Parker so mad for Greg or whatever his name was for dumping the Hoffmans old slues box? Asking if he wanted to take money right out of his pocket. He dumped it on the ground. Dig it back up and run it through. He acted liked he dumped it in the black hole and it couldn't be retrieved. Made me wonder about the show then. I can see him being mad, but it wasn't that big of a deal unless I am missing something.

I saw most of these guys at a construction trade show in Vegas last week. The line was crazy to get pictures with them.

Used to play a drinking game while pregaming when I was in the dorms freshman year. It was the only thing on on Friday evenings for the most part

We drank every time they said "Glory Hole"

Worked pretty well
