Closing at the end of business tonight.

A staple of Main Street for many years...and now I have to find a new dive bar at which to hang my hat.

My first time over there last night. Wish I would have wondered over there a time or two during my 5 years at Iowa State, it is too bad that it is closing.

Sounds like ownership just got caught in a really bad spot.

I know some will be sad to see it go, but I won't. I got the creeps every time I was in there, and that place seriously has THE rudest bartenders I've seen anywhere in the country. I can't tell you how many times the bartender would look at someone waiting patiently at the bar for their turn (cash in their hand and a smile on their face), would make eye contact with them, then resume talking to their friends and ignoring customers. Good riddance to bad rubbish, I say. Whiskey River was a craphole.

That sucks, did it get declared structurally unsafe or something? That building was in pretty bad shape. Loved that bar.

That's happened to my friends and I before too.

Good Riddance. Rude bartenders is absolutely right. Go across the street to Sportsmans Lounge aka Sporty's. They have shuffleboard. Best bar in all of Ames.

anyone know what is going in there? They used to have great bar food before the smoking ban a decade or so ago. It used to be one of the better bars downtown.

Hating on the Whiskey River? Shame on you....It was very much a great place full of clone fans watching games and eating brilliant food.

Rude bartenders or was it really bad customers?

From what I heard the owners of the building are raising the rent to much, basically forcing the bar out.

Sorry for those that had a bad time it was a good place to hang out.

My suggestion always try to get to know your bartenders no matter where you go and be somewhat of a regular at a place and you should see better treatment. AND TIP WELL. Bartenders always remember who tip well. Just the way it is with ANY bar. If you tip well no matter what the service is like on the first drink you will get better service the rest of the night. Like it or not just the way it is.

You can hear the same complaint about service at any bar in town.

I'm a good customer everywhere I go. I worked at a gas station to pay for my college so I know what it's like to have bad customers, it makes you respect other people with not so glamorous jobs.

And I'm not going to keep going to bars and become a regular to get better service. If a beer is $3, you can expect me to leave a $1. If I get 6 beers a night, I usually tip 5 of those times.
Do you go to restaurants that have bad service continually to hope to get better service after becoming a "regular".

Whiskey River was a lot like Sips when I was in college. If you didn't know the bartenders, be prepared to wait.

I never had a problem there going back to the 90s, bar staff varies I'd imagine over that long of a time.

Too bad.

The building is gonna be condemned at some point. The owners don't want to spend the money to fix it up. The bar owner is tired of being caught up in the b.s. As for the bartenders...well, I can't say I'd treat some of the trash that filled that place up on the weekends any better. I'll be there at some point tonight to watch it go down in flames though!

Can you go into more detail? I'm not sure I get the whole picture. :biglaugh:

I agree it was a creepy place...

When I was in Ames, The River had by far the BEST bartenders in Ames. Why? Because they recognized regulars and didn't bend over backwards for drunken "tourists" who demanded everything instantly.

The people who didn't like the bartenders there where most likely too drunk from their previous stops on their bar crawl to warrant any decent response from the bar.
