Good Mechanic in Ankeny/Ames?

Hey guys I'd like to find a good mechanic that is trustworthy and affordable that can perform basic maintenance on my '99 Honda Accord and my wife's '01 Jetta. I live in Ankeny and work in Ames so I could easily go either place. Where do you guys get your maintenance done?

I have always had great service from Trickle Firestone on Lincolnway in Ames. Darwin Trickle runs it and he took it over from his dad. He is on the south side of Lway and just a half block west of Duff. Very honest and does good work. AND he is a Cyclone booster.

I will second that regarding Trickles. I've only had tire work done there, but the reputation is correct--excellent service. I have also had good luck at Tuffy's (they've shown me the actual parts on the car that needed fixed or were broken--I definitely trust them), and 2 guys in our office swear by Fix-It Auto on S. Borne in Ames.

I lived in Ames for 3 years and found Tuffy on Duff Ave to be trustworthy. I believe the manager was Scott. Anyway, that was from 2001 - 2004 so with a franchise it's hard to say what it might be like now.

I 2nd Tuffy. Been there quite a bit in the last few months for various things. My car isn't that old (8 years) but has almost 200,000 miles on it and has been in 3 accidents so things happen to it easily.

We went through a period where some heads broke and had to get almost a brand new engine, then a few days later something in the rear axle broke, then a couple weeks later had some bad noises coming from the hood, and they ended up throwing in a free tire rotation and oil change on the last visit because we've been having so much trouble.

Hansen Sinclair on the corner of Duff and Lincoln Way has always treated me fairly.

Ames Import Motors, or whatever the name is now after their remodel, on the corner of Hyland and Lincoln way gave me some very bad advice, twice. If they haven't changed owners in the last 5 years, steer clear of them.

I've had good luck with Magic Muffler in Ames and have actually driven up there from Ankeny for service.

Thanks for your input, fellas. I will probably try out Trickles for my car and take the wife's somewhere in Ankeny...either Dale at the BP or Tuffy's.

Btw, Never buy a Volkswagen. My wife bought the Jetta before we got married and it seems like something breaks on it every month. I swear VW's are more frail than Alfonso Soriaono's legs.
