Weren’t we getting more push from OL vs Iowa than we can ever remember?Check back mid-season and see how we have fared. Than see if we improve in the 2nd half. If we auger in all season long than I'll be pessimistic. Right now I am not particularly optimistic with no Big 12 level receivers and probably another OL that is sub-par. Defense will keep us in games but not win us games.
I don't think the gambling thing is overblown at all. On a team that stresses culture and character, starters at the two highest profile positions on the team weren't "bought in" to the character-culture mindset (along with other starters). In fact, they were pretty much the opposite of "bought-in". These starters are supposed to be the leaders. And it wasn't just a couple of bets here and there, we are talking about hundreds of bets, and bets made on ISU FB games in which they played. It was certainly stupid, but it was also an oft-repeated blatant disregard for clearly defined rules and the authority of the coaches.I think you're making the gambling thing way, way more than it actually is. Guys making a $10 bet on DraftKings isn't the same as some kind of point shaving scandal. Stupid? Yes. But is it a sign of terrible character on the team? I really don't think it is.
Look around college sports at some of the really bad behavior that we see repeatedly at some schools: Michigan State — cough, cough.
We aren't anything like that, thank God.
But I will say that a decent season this year will make me feel a little better about our long term football outlook. We've underachieved the last 2 seasons and lost some momentum.
What’s weird is, you would think he would be under immense pressure, yet he has a Zen like peace about him.I voted yes just because 1-6 vs Iowa is unacceptable. There is no excuse for it, Iowa is not that good of a team.
I'm not ready to jump on the "fire Campbell" bandwagon. But it is frustrating to see the same mistakes over and over. I thought the offensive play calling would be better this year and it's not. This offense does NOT work, yet here it is again this year. Watch other college football teams and most of them have creativity in their play calling. We have none. Not even a simple jet sweep, no QB runs, no play action, etc.
Not really sure what else to say, but something is different about Campbell now. I don't know what it is.

I think you're reading that far too literally. From the video in this thread (Campbell pre-Ohio press conference) at about 19:40:
"Well, there's no prep for third and long. Because here's what you don't want to be in third and long. And the prep is you know be better without putting ourselves in that situation...."
I can't even anymore. How is this acceptable to y'all?
He was laughing at a dumb question from Randy. If your takeaway from a joke in a press conference is that they don't practice 3rd and long situations I'd suggest taking a few Saturdays offFrom the video in this thread (Campbell pre-Ohio press conference) at about 19:40:

What?I voted yes. I think l’m different than most people on this board. I go to games for entertainment and to have fun. I don’t care if we have a championship team. My favorite coach of all time is Johnny Orr. At ISU, he went to one sweet 16 and was barely above .500 for his career here. However, the games were fun to watch. We always had a chance to win, at least at home. The football games the last couple years haven’t been much fun. I don’t see this changing unless he hits another Purdy, Hall, Kolar, etc. home run.
Just relax! Too many threads putting down the team and the season just started. The season must be judged at the end of the season not at the beginning. There must be patience. In the past a meltdown thread is usually created where all the drunks, haters, and pissed off people can go to hate talk.
Now, I'm definitely not going to the level that we're in the early stages of a decline.
BUT, I do think there were periods in both the McCarney and Rhoads eras where we thought this is THE guy for the job and hopefully he'll be here forever. 2000 and early 2001, as well as 2004 going into '05 I'd say the prospects of Mac being forced out would've sounded absolutely crazy. I think Rhoads in late 2011 (say after Okie St.) you'd say the same thing.
I still think Campbell is a really good coach and a good fit for ISU. Like it or not, his tendencies and style that leads him to do things that drive us crazy also helped him do things that are largely unprecedented at ISU. The gambling thing had my expectations low.
The one thing that could really shake my confidence is Heacock retiring soon. Dude is just a straight-up wizard. All this talk for years now about people replicating and figuring out his version of the 3-3-5 stack, and that cagey old bastard just stays a step ahead. And man, Cooper, Tyler O, Dom Orange, Tampa and Freyler can PLAY!

This gambling was going on during the 2021 season, when ISU seriously under-performed with the returning uber-experienced team that won the Fiesta bowl the previous year, and the gambling was going on during the 2022 debacle.
I just hope whatever was going on is purged from the program. Something was not right.
They already do.TJ haters are ready to pounce the moment we struggle. Count on it.
JFC this is going on in every single program in America.
