How much longer are we going to rely on the tent defense, allowing opposing teams the move the ball at will? Hint. It is not working. Teams are seeing that they can score 20 + yards out, from the non red zone, before ISU gets serious.
Bend but don't break only works when you can reliably not break, and the back end doesn't defend the pass well enough to reliably not break.

Im not saying to get rid of Heacock. Heacock came up with this defensive scheme after a loss to Texas in Ames. Perhaps its time to adjust it.
I'm sure everything is on the table to be re-examinded at the end of the season. Too many moving pieces to do any major overhaul during the season. Gotta figure out how to adjust in the first half and then tweak at halftime.

We scored 38 and lost?? WTF are you talking about?
TTU has scored a lot and gave up more. Texas, OU, and TCU combined to score 174 points against TTU. It’s a terrible defensive team with a good offense.

The defense was not good today. And did you seriously say the defense lost all of ISUs games this year. Iowa had like 2.9 yards per play. Odds of winning g when you hold the other team to that are damn near 100%.

In the MC era special teams have sucked. Offense has been OK and defense has been very good. Our best unit by a mile.

I wish they brought pressure early in the game to try to rattle that rookie red shirt freshman QB for his first start. He got too comfortable back there and built confidence. When pressure was brought it was way too late in the game.

The tech people around me couldn’t believe it either.

Terrible terrible strategy this is the 3rd time if you count the first half against baylor

Texas currently down to KU 21-14 on ESPNU.

Holy cow that win looks not very impressive.

Texas is at best the second worst team in the conf.

Heacock is great, he is why we have had success. I do think, WV figured this out and any team with a heartbeat knows where to attack now. Texas doesn’t count. I think John will figure it out, or maybe we just can’t cover worth a damn and everyone knows now. Hard to say just by watching on TV for me.

With no pass rush against WV and TT it aloud their QB’s to pick us apart! Also with a 4th down lineman McDonald wouldn’t be triple teamed most of the games and have a lot more sacks! I feel sorry for that young man!
Umm... that's not how blocking schemes work. You can still totally triple team one defensive linemen in a 4 man front. Not to mention - he doesn't win 100% of the time against one on one blocking so technically, I understand why you say that but its not a guaranteed trade off... Teams for example could always chip with a tight end or roll away from him in a 4 man front, etc... most staffs would counter our counter so its hard to say for certain what would happen.

Its simple... the defensive line is TIRED. We have no seen any young ends until recently. And there for a while weren't seen a ton of Lee or Singleton at nose. Enyi, Will and Zach are exhausted. They have probably played about 90-95% of the snaps this season. I never coached at a big college but I know enough to know that if you're going to ask 3 defensive linemen to play almost every snap or that close.... they are going to be gassed at the end of the season.

I don't know if the other young ends are all that far away from developing or what but those three guys are gassed. I was certainly never good enough as a player and never rose to a high enough level as a coach beyond NAIA but the punishment a defensive linemen takes is a mini-car wreck almost every play where you have 300-600 pounds slamming into 50-60 times.

That's the main reason IMO the rush defense is starting to lag and the pass rush is not that great. We have 3 really good proven guys and we ride them but they are exhausted at this point in the season. If we could get another young end out there for 10-15 plays the last two weeks I am pretty sure that unit would play better. But if no one else is ready, then we're just kinda stuck.

The frustration is we got wholloped by Texas in 2016 and they went to the drawing board and created a new D. We've been exposed in three straight games and we do the same thing. Teams have caught on to the scheme. Yes, he has been amazing. But it's time for a slight update.
3 straight games? Did we not just shut down Texas a week ago?

Agree it's time for some adjustments though. We got ZERO pressure on the QB in the WV game and tonight. I understand the 3 man rush at times. Not against a freshman QB making his first start though. You've got to be the aggressor in that situation and force him to beat you. We allowed him to comfortable with little to no pressure the entire first half.

yeah, I do think he is getting a little comfortable with rushing 3 a bit too much. he is at his best when you dont know where that blitz is coming from, and we seem to have gotten away from that some this year.

Why does he get a pass? His defense has been responsible for all of our losses this year. Today was an absolute disaster on D! I can’t wait to no longer see a 3 man front! Time to innovate!!
Can we ask where the offense was for the entire 1st half??

I appreciate this post. I also just saw the West Virginia offensive output today. I am also seeing the KU/Texas score now.
Not seeing that your players and over-worked 3 down linemen are gassed and not being able to adapt is "coaching". As well as motivating and margin-teaching. That flat-footed zone crap we had out there today from opening snap to the last 40 seconds just makes you wonder what the coaches are seeing. That last drive when our three linemen were stood up with no help for pressure....... I just don't get it. Prevent Victory.
