Was wondering if anyone in iowa has had any luck with hermit crabs. Just got back from vacation to South Carolina and the wife let the kids get 3 hermit crabs. I guess I didn't say no either. Since White committed, if anyone wants to pay for my future vacations, I will gladly go. Maybe Chris W. and I can go together as a package deal. Back to my question. Has anyone in Iowa had luck with these things? I see on the internet that humidity is important and that is my concern. My youngest son named one of them Georges Niang. So don't let him die, or is it too late and I never should have got them? Any advice would be helpful. Thanks.

I had one at one point (10-15 years ago, so you may want to double check this advice). If I recall correctly, we had a sponge that we kept wet in the tank and then just fed him hermit crab good or Cheerios. Keep a spray bottle with water and give a spray into the tank every day or two to keep it damp. Other than that, not much to think about. Extremely easy to keep.

There was a whole long thread on here a couple years ago. Someone had daughters whose grandfather agreed to buy them some Hermit crabs if they agreed to cheer for the Hawks in a game.

One of the greatest responses/posts ever in the history of the internet was soon posted.

Something like, "Makes sense - Cheer for the Hawks, get Crabs!"

I had some as a kid. Lived a long time.
I changed the sand once in a while, kept a wet sea sponge in it, and got them bigger shells to grow into.

If anyone knows how long they lived up here would be nice to know as well. Thought I might have to buy a humidifier and heater but from the first few posts, maybe not necessary. I bought the crab food and the sponges and read tap water isn't good for them so I bought distilled water last night. Just put in a clear rubber made tote to give them more room with wet creek sand. Remember Georges life is at stake.

I had some and the thing I remember is that they smelled. Wasn't too upset when they died.

Thinking all hermit crabs look alike to a non-crab, maybe just find a local pet shop that has many Georges Niang's on hand just in case the current Georges Niang goes on a walkabout with crab god.

These need to be ISU logo stuff like little mini helmets!

I bet they have those at Jordan Creek. My sister in law got her son one with a superman painted shell, although it did die like 2 weeks later, but I don't think they had any clue how to take care of it. She was going to replace it with a batman shelled crab, but he wasn't too upset when 'super-crab' died.
