Hilton Question

I saw on the NCAA website some attendance figures for various years. It said that, in 1972, ISU averaged 15,554 in men's basketball. After doing a little research, I found that Hilton supposedly never held more than it does now. Does anyone know how that number was possible? Standing room only? Temporary seating? Just curious.

The numbers for 1972 and 1973 are incorrect. Most likely Iowa, not ISU.

1972 - 13,064
1973 - 10,883

Could they have possibly meant Iowa instead of Iowa State? Iowa was on the surrounding lists as Iowa St wasnt. Interesting all the same

The Fieldhouse capacity was under 14,000, so I doubt it.

I believe SRO tickets were sold at that time to account for the higher-than-capacity attendance numbers.

They once did that at CHA for a wbb game in the late 80s (I think) and ended up with something like 22,000 people in a 15,500 seat arena. Apparently, the fire marshall told them to not do that again.

The year we got hosed against Kansas at home we probably had 300 extra students in the building. They over-sold student tickets, the students rushed through the doors, and they didn't scan people's tickets to get an idea of attendance. Students were sitting in the aisles, doubled up in seats, and standing around the entire concourse 2-3 deep.

Though I cannot answer what the rated capacity for Hilton was when it opened, or in 1972. I will say that seating capacity for basketball has been greater in years past. However changes in building codes, differences in seating configurations in the lower level, all of these control what is the maximum number of seats you can fill. During the Orr era, the band sat in a separate small bleacher in the corner next to the visitor's bench. I believe those bleachers are gone now. Also, I have seen games where the area directly behind the baskets at both ends is not filled with bleachers, but is a tunnel entrance covered over with an ISU banner. Anyhow, I believe I have seen in old literature a maximum seating configuration number of 15,200. But I don't know if this was ever for basketball.

Dang, where was this link when I was going at it with Stormin the other week on attendance and they claimed that attendance didn't decline under Wayne Morgan?

2002 - ISU averaged 12,110 in Eustachy's last year. Morgan was there from 2003-2006 and we weren't on that list once in his tenure. Re-appeared in 2007 in GMac's first years at 12,489 and 13,317 in 2008. Sorry to sidetrack this topic but interesting to see attendance trends not only at ISU but nationally so thanks for providing that link!

The listed capacity for hoops has gone up from 14,092 to 14,384 as changes were made in the lower-level seating.
*Filled in west end
*Added one bleacher section on west end (when band was moved out)
*Added small areas in each corner
*Converted east baseline seats from media to ticketed

If you can believe the numbers on the Hilton Coliseum Wikipedia page, it was 14,020 when it opened in 1971 until 1998.

I miss being on those stands in pep band. It was fun being in a band configuration rather than being stuck in the stands.

Still some of the best seats in the house though. :)

Back in those days it looks like the first few Big 8 games of the season were played in Kansas City. Maybe ISU was designated as the "home" team in one or more of those games and then those attendance numbers were included in total home attendance accidentally?

Whatever it is it seems like an error.

The holiday tournament games were played at Municipal (capacity 10,000) until 1974-75.

You have to be more specific.
