It's not easy to play against the number 1 team in the country overall when there's 350+ teams in it, and it's even harder to actually beat that team. Wonder what the all time records against the number 1 ranked team is for everyone tbh
Exactly what I was thinking.

Announcers saying it like "only 3 wins ever". And I'm just thinking, we probably over 50% against #1

I get that it’s fun to report, but the angle of “first time beaten a #1 ranked team since 2016” is actually probably a positive stat for a program.

Most teams probably only play a #1 ranked team once every 4-5 years on average and obviously harder to beat #1 than an average team so we aren’t talking about 50/50 games, beating two of them in a 6 year span is probably waaaaaaaay above average even if you only count P6 programs.

My memory is so bad I can barely even remember that OU was #1 in 2016. Guessing that’s when Buddy Heild (currently known as Tyrese Haliburton’s sidekick) was lighting world on fire. I mean I remember his teams were good but don’t remember them as “#1” caliber. I think the ever obnoxious rebounding machine Spangler was there too or maybe he had left?
It's hard to believe that Steve Prohm coached the ISU team that beat #1 OU.

They didn't. It was a wire (AP) story.

Probably put in some corner of the 5th page?

Just a note: KCRG.com still hasn't posted anything about Iowa State beating Iowa in men's basketball last season.

Playing #1 is such a crapshoot in basketball. Once you get in conference it’s even moreso. Would be interesting to see the # of weeks each school has spent at #1 over the past 10 years. Also of note seems like Gonzaga has been #1 at times lately and once they get to conference they don’t lose.

Has to be a couple games KU was ranked #1 and we got screwed out of a win by the officials?. I still count those as wins in my book. We beat the national champions on their home court last season.

I'm going to guess that teams in the ACC typically have more games against #1 teams than anyone else, with old PAC-8/10 schools close behind thanks to the eternal UCLA run.

This. Pretty rare to actually get the chance to play #1. 3 wins against #1 is pretty solid.
Pretty sure they said last night either this was the 3rd time in 22 times against #1 or we have won 3 and lost 22. It was one of the 2. So we have either played the #1 team 22 or 25 times, and won 3 of them, according to what they said last night.

I too figured it would have been a few more against KU, but either way. Seems the power of the Big 8/12 shows with playing #1 that many times.
