Article from today on The Athletic:

Some quotes that stood out to me:

On Osunniyi:
"We think he can facilitate some offense. And then also we’re going to empower him to shoot the 3, which he hadn’t done yet in his career. But we feel like with his stroke and the work he’s put in, he’s made a lot of progress there. So it’s something we’re going to ask of him offensively."

How to improve offensively:
"We turn people over a lot. We’ve got to do a better job scoring off turnovers than we did last year. So that’s specifically scoring in advantage situations, converting and transition, that sort of thing. I also think we need to keep the ball on the move a little bit more, and not be as apt to catch and hold, catch and dribble. Get it side to side, get the defense to force more closeouts. And I think the third way is on the offensive glass we can be more effective"

On the freshman:
"They’ll all earn minutes for us this year. They all will. On one end of it, based on what happened last year in the Big 12, that’s scary because there were really only three freshmen that played in the entire league last year."

On the 2023 Recruiting class:
"You can sell hope or you can sell what it’s going to be like. And I think when people see it work, then that creates a different level of belief in what can actually happen."

On the Tyrese situation and how to avoid it:
"Part of the challenge with Tyrese was that he signed with the previous coaching staff. So we didn’t have the time out in front to build that relationship and that trust quite the same way as you do in a normal recruiting process. It was speed dating. So we didn’t have that same investment in one another that you normally have."

TJ gives good interviews. They aren't entirely coach-speak. They don't sell out all of his secrets, either, but he provides useful information mixed in with general noise. Good piece.
Some of still reminds me a little bit of Campbell, but TJ does seem to maybe give a little more.

I think point two is the whole enchilada (for the coming season).
He goes on to say that hitting the offensive glass hard and getting to the free throw line is also a priority.

Agree. I felt like there were times last year where we had the opportunity to play with pace after we forced a TO but we were content to slow things down.

I found the Tyrese comments interesting. That explains a lot IMO.
Not sure if you're able to read the article but another interesting quote from that portion:

"When you look at guys that we’ve recruited for a year or two years before they get to campus, there’s a different level of trust and investment that everybody has in one another."

The Tyrese thing explains alot. That being said, don't go to a scrub program like Texas ffs. All the offers he had and that's where he ends up? Good riddance.

Intriguing to actively add 3-point shooting for Osun. He has 3 attempts in 4 seasons ... total.
Just a guess, but wondering if that was a selling point to get him to come to Ames. That is an element he'll have to add, probably, in order to have any shot at playing in the NBA.

That makes me wonder a bit, where this quote comes from. The 3 incoming FR are the only guys on the roster that TJ would have recruited for 1-2 years. Everyone else came in via previous coaching staff (Hunter, Conditt, Jackson, Walker) or transfer. Know that there was previous relationship with Grill of course, but not sure on Kunc, Jones, Brockington, or Gabe.

I think more than anything he's talking about just "true" freshman.

Yeah, TJ did a full high school recruiting cycle with Grill at South Dakota state before taking the UNLV job. Plus he supposedly had all but completely recruited Kunc to UNLV before taking the Iowa State job. Plus he could also be talking about guys he recruited at previous stops like Mike Daum at South Dakota state, or even Iowa State guys from when he was an assistant.

Could be. Makes as much sense as anything.

If it's untapped potential the staff sees to augment his inside game, it could be a genius move. Or it could backfire.

I am guessing, just going off recent history, that TJ will let him shoot some in the less important non-con games. If he shoots <30% on limited attempts, I'd say the experiment will be over prior to Big 12 play.

Seems like Solomon Young tried adding it to his game at one point, and Conditt went 0-3 as a Sophomore as well, before never attempting another one the rest of his Cyclone career.

Yeah just a bad decision, imo. I wonder how long Beard lasts at Texas. I saw he has already lost two assistants after year one. One retired to take a job outside of coaching and the other went to work for Tang at KSU. They kept that incoming Freshman on the team as far as I know even though he has been charged with assaulting his girlfriend.
