When I was reading through the "Where were you born?" thread, it started me thinking about how many times I have moved. For someone who never lived in a military family, I moved a LOT until the last 9 years. By the time I was 34, I had moved 17 times in my life. My wife and I lived in our 7th apt/house on our 14th anniversary. I have now lived in the same house for 9 years.

I am not counting moving back home. I am counting if I moved during college (not from one room to another on campus though), but between the time I left for college and got married, I only have 3 moves that I am counting out of the 17.

Let's see...
New York to Davenport, IA
Davenport, IA to Alexandria, VA (Washington, DC)
Alexandria, VA to Davenport, IA
Davenport, IA to Ames, IA (only going to count this once as this was college)
Ames, IA back to my parents
My parents to my best friend's house
My best friend's house back to my parents (because my best friend was getting married and I was getting married 6 months later)
My parents' house to "our" first apartment
First apartment to our condo
Our condo back to my parents (we were moving to Detroit and had to sell the condo - and we live like slobs so best not to live there while trying to sell it)
My parents to the apartment we're currently living in
Within the next few months we'll be moving out of this apartment into a house.

10 if counting summer moves (which for me were never back to the parents' and usually out of state) and 4 if only counting more permanent moves. One of the big reasons we stayed in our ****** apt for so long was because moving sucks. I hope I'm done moving until it's because I'm dead or something.

I would spend a week back home at the beginning/end of summer, but I spent my summers on internships so I counted it with and without those moves. Never moved back home after I got to ISU.

Try moving with kids. My oldest son lived in his third state a month after his second birthday. Every one of our children moved by the time they were 4 with two of them moving to different cities. My oldest son rebelled against us when we made him switch schools in 2nd grade and pretty much never got over it. My youngest son has been pretty stable though. We moved when he was 1 and haven't moved since.

Broken down a bit...

4 places with my parents

5 places in college

4 places since college.

On the other end of the spectrum I could make a case it's 2 for me. Once when I went to college (stayed in Ames the whole time) and when I bought a house right after college that I still live in 6 and a half years later. Unless you want to count moving from the hospital to my only childhood home.

I stopped keeping track at 46. Though I'm finally settled down now.

I've lived in 7 states and spent the third grade in three different time zones.

I assume this means "places of residence" and not limited to "different town/city et al" (e.g., 3 different addresses in same city counts as 3)?
