Disagree. The Monarch, while without any real power, does have one majorly important function for society. Reminding everyone they are all in it together -- they have a shared history, and a shared future. Politicians can't do that anymore, because of the vitriol of the 24 hour news cycle and social media. The Queen has the power to unite, encourage, comfort. She's done a pretty damn good job of it.

Who could do that in the US now? When is the last time one person united the US like that?

I am no fan of monarchy, but I do admire those who are dedicated to their job--and she was.

Have you read the conversations going on between people in the UK? I don't think maintaining the lavish lifestyle of an anachronistic, hereditary position is doing it for them. Having a monarch wouldn't sort out our issues either.

And we do kind of have “nobility” here in the states; it’s just based on inherited wealth.

I also think your post is a credit to Elizabeth II’s reign. Because you could just as easily have someone odious as king/queen who acts as a divider not a uniter
