My question is: Why the hell was rhoads talking up our D-line before the season? And Arnaud? He kept saying, "These guys are ready"

Ready for what? A decent game against northern illinois? Man, we showed them!

Its still early, but I have seen nothing that proves to me what dramatic change he's seen in practice from these guys year 1 to year 2

I'm not sure if it's ISU's d-line struggling more than expected or if Iowa's o-line is actually way ahead of where most Iowa fans thought they would be this early in the season. Iowa's o-line was supposed to struggle at least early because of inexperience, but they have done pretty well.

I wouldn't worry too much yet. The d-line has had one pretty good game and one bad game.

DL is so hard to recruit but is in need of a major upgrade.. i see guys like david irving as the type of commits we need more of. after 2 years on the weights he can be 6'7" and 275 lbs, and play the kind of hybrid DE/DT mold. Guys like Rashawn Parker and Patrick Neal have maxed out their bodies at 6' and 240 lbs and cant physically match up

10+ with the same program vs 1.5 in thr CPR.

Think a little please rebecca.
didn't our o-line "dominate" (as some good analysts have said) their line last year = it's a year later and they are dropping us on our *** -- seems like a fair question to me? They lost people too??

It is more than just S&C, although they do have one of the best. They also typically get much better athletes in recruiting. In state, they dominate us. We rarely get a player that has an Iowa offer from our own state.

Their out of state players are typically much more heavily recruited as well. On average, many of their recruits have several offers from schools such as Missouri, Mich State, Nebraska, etc. We get excited if we get a commit with one offer from a lower tier BCS school.

They put 3-4 players into the NFL each year. We are lucky to get 1 each season and it's almost never a first day draftee.

Hopefully Paul can change our DL and OL recruiting, but I haven't seen anything to make me think that's happened yet.

Also, everyone keeps saying that most of Iowa's DL and OL have been in their system (S&C) for 4-5 years. I don't think that's necessarily true. Guys like Clayborn and Ballard are SR's but have been very effective for the previous seasons before 2010. Some of the OL are very young. They are just better athletes to begin with, IMO.

This guy has it. The problem is recruiting not the strength and conditioning program. We just need to be patient and see if we start seeing some better recruiting in the next few years. I think we will.

I think our dline will be ok against most teams, just not against the 4 top 10 teams on the schedule. Iowa's dline was about the most impressive I have seen, they can snuff the run and apply constant pressure with just 4 guys. Our front 7 had no chance after being on the field the entire 1st quarter. We won't be great, but I think we will be able to come up with some stops.

S&C is every bit as important as recruiting. You can take a look at all of those Iowa guys in the NFL. Compare them to the Iowa State NFL guys, may they be few in numbers.

Player Pos. Current Team NFL Service
Pat Angerer LB Indianapolis Colts 1st year
Jonathan Babineaux DT Atlanta Falcons 5 years
Jason Baker P Carolina Panthers 9 years
Ladell Betts RB New Orleans Saints 8 years
Rob Bruggeman OL Atlanta Falcons 1 year
Bryan Bulaga OL Green Bay Packers 1st year
Kyle Calloway OL Buffalo Bills 1st year
Scott Chandler TE New York Giants 3 years
Dallas Clark TE Indianapolis Colts 7 years
Colin Cole DL Seattle Seahawks 7 years
Sean Considine DB Jacksonville Jaguars 5 years
Jared DeVries DL Detroit Lions 11 years
A.J. Edds LB Miami Dolphins 1st year
Bradley Fletcher DB St. Louis Rams 1 year
Robert Gallery OL Oakland Raiders 6 years
Charles Godfrey DB Carolina Panthers 2 years
Mike Goff OL Kansas City Chiefs 12 years
Shonn Greene RB New York Jets 1 year
Chad Greenway LB Minnesota Vikings 4 years
Abdul Hodge LB Cincinnati Bengals 4 years
Ken Iwebema DL Arizona Cardinals 2 years
Nate Kaeding PK San Diego Chargers 6 years
Aaron Kampman DL Jacksonville Jaguars 8 years
Mitch King DL Indianapolis Colts 1 year
Matt Kroul DL New York Jets 1 year
Bryan Mattison DL Baltimore Ravens 2 years
Tony Moeaki TE Kansas City Chiefs 1st year
Brandon Myers TE Oakland Raiders 1 year
Seth Olsen OL Denver Broncos 1 year
Marcus Paschal DB Baltimore Ravens 2 years
Derreck Robinson DL Cleveland Browns 5 years
Matt Roth DE Cleveland Browns 5 years
Bob Sanders DB Indianapolis Colts 6 years
Amari Spievey DB Detroit Lions 1st year
Eric Steinbach OL Cleveland Browns 7 years
Casey Wiegmann OL Kansas City Chiefs 14 years
Marshal Yanda OLB Baltimore Ravens 3 years
Albert Young RB Minnesota Vikings 2 years

almost every single one of those guys came in as slow, weak, undersized, and not heavily recruited!!! Thats amazing! There are 0 five star players on that list. I'd even say most of them are 2-3 star players!

The OL just isn't at the same level as last year. KO is very good, but we lost our 2nd and 3rd best lineman from last year. Alvarez is below average, but he's what we've got. He has progressed, however, from two years ago when he was thrown in at center.

C: Stephens>Lamaak
RG: Lamaak>Hicks
RT: Haughton>Burris

Losing Reggie and Scott not only caused a drop in talent, but also a change in attitude. I'm hoping some of the true frosh we brought in this year turn into beasts, I think there is also a lot of potential in Lichtenberg and Bykowski also.

We're in Year 2, Iowa is in Year 12

We probably won't see a better D-line this year and even though Iowa starts a number of new guys on offense, Ferentz knows how to develop offensive lineman. Just look at the Hawks in the NFL- alot of guys from both sides of the line.

I would guess that if Paul Rhoads hadn't already realized that developing a strong OL/DL is crucial to a consistent program, the message came across loud and clear on Saturday. The harsh reality, it takes a few years to develop OL/DL players. The ideal is to redshirt year1, get stronger year 2, push for minutes year 3 and hopefully be ready by year 4.

I think 2 things will happen- we will recruit the DL agressively over the next couple years. We'll bring in numbers and work hard get bigger/stronger. Second, I think we'll see ISU OL get smaller. Based on some of the kids brought in last spring, IMO future ISU lineman will be more like Burris around 300lbs, than the current OL where guys are well over 300lbs.

Soph: plays LB
Jr: starts at TE
Sr: Wins Mackey award for best TE in the nation

development? How about robert gallery? Bulaga? King? Kroul? Edds? Angerer? Greenway? Kampman? Roth? Sanders?

1-2 star recruits

Slight nitpick on your last post, Moeaki was a 5 star. He was the #1 TE coming out of HS.

our oversized offensive linemen and our undersized defensive line acted like a bunch of runts when compared to iowa's offensive and defensive linemen. our offensive linemen were pushed all over the place by iowa's defensive linemen and the same occurred when
iowa's offensive linemen pushed our defensive linemen all over the field.

I think you are right dualthreat about us being out manned on sat. But i think we have to give ia their due. they are in the 10th or so year of ferents' program, they may have the best team iowa has ever had this year ( time will tell). CPR is in his second! I think the wins and success will come but it wont happen overnight. General its the 3rd or 4th year of a coaches tenure before you really start to see the fruits of his labor. Patience. we are all pumped for this season. all is not lost. we gotta regroup, put that game way behind us and stay positive, its a long season yet!!

Bulaga, Kampman and Roth were 4 stars. Although both Kampman and Roth were LBs in HS who converted to great DEs at Iowa. Bulaga was highly recruited and always a stud.

Things I have yet to see talked about:

1# Iowa is filthy stinking rich with Big Ten Money, Bowl Millions, sponsors and donations. They can attract the best people and pay them more than most schools. Part of this is because they get money from Iowans who think it should go to Iowa over every other program including ISU. Ferentz came out of the NFL for starters in this money game.

2# Big bucks mean top-notch facilities for training and gameday right on down to the concessions. Which contributes to attracting student athletes which contribute to success. The mindset right now is if you are from Iowa you go to Iowa if you're any good. That hurts... though we do get a few of the top kids CPR is doing good by hitting Texas and Florida.

I heard it said that Iowa is our (choke, gag) our "Pro Team." I have also had a friend from Illinois tell me Iowa State reflects the State of Iowa better in its struggles. Good people working hard and hoping to get better but beaten enough to know it will be a long process.

U of Iowa's football success represents fulfilment of hopes and dreams some Iowans think they deserve -- it attracts the big egos and big mouths along with the realists -- in a State know for its otherwise average, middle of the pack ways being a Hawk Fan makes them feel like somebody in the eyes of the world.

I said it then and I will say it now. Losing Scott Haughton was HUGE. Pile on losing Steohens and now you lost your two best lineman or if you want to argue it 2 out of our best 3. Those two did a ton for that line. KO was exposed last week. Now, that's not to say he will be dominated again because I think that Dline is the best we will see but we need him to do better.

Some of you guys need to cool your jets. My god, it's like we all expected to be a good team in year 2. It isn't going to happen. It will take time. A large amount of it.

Thats not fair to this staff. They have had guys in their program for 1.5 years.
