You know, whenever someone from Florida/the SE wonders why I live in Iowa and deal with the cold, I just point to **** like this. Why would you want to deal with this a couple times a year?
I lived in the Florida Keys and worked at a year-round camp/marine biology education center from March of 2004 to early June of 2007. During that time period of 3 years and 3 months or so, I (and all of camp, including campers during our summer seasons) had to evacuate the Keys no less than 4 times, and do some heavy preparation/battening down the hatches for hurricanes at least as many times. In fact, I can say with a straight face that I went through Hurricane Katrina, at least the outer bands of it, in its early stages as a Category 1 when it came across southern Florida before hitting the Gulf of Mexico and wiping out the Gulf Coast.
There were a lot of very nice aspects about living down there, and I still like to visit from time to time, but all of the damn hurricanes were one of the reasons why it was time for me to leave when I did.
