Has anyone used hydroseeding for spot patching and repairing thin/bare areas? Would our lawn gurus recommend doing so? If so, any recommendations for the Ankeny/DM area?

We moved into our new place last fall and immediately went to work on removing a lot of overgrown landscaping, including two large pine trees. While we cleaned things up quite a bit, we were left with a lot of sizable bare areas in the lawn.

I seeded last fall and again this spring. Overall, I would say about 70% of the newly seeded areas germinated, but I still have some areas that need work.

I could wait through another fall/spring seeding cycle, but I was curious if I had other options such as hydroseeding. (I don't plan to try something like Scott's EZ Seed as I've never had much luck with those types of products, and most product reviews are not positive.)

Great question. I have a huge back yard that we could sod only about a quarter of it. The rest is where a barn or large building was at sometime ago and the ground has its good and bad spots. We still have some huge areas that I would like to get patched.

Did my parents roof and poured their driveway last fall. In March I put top soil and basic grass seed mixed in with a garden rake along the new driveway. Grass came up and looks great. I only string trim it right now though.

Hydroseeded our entire front and back yard several years ago in Oct. Mowed the grass 3 weeks later. Highly recommend. The grass will root deeper compared to sod. 10 years later we have the nicest lawn in the neighborhood.
