Yeah I saw this a few days ago, horrible interpretation of the rules by the official that threw the flag.

1. Skip Bayless is an idiot

I have mixed feelings on this. I think that motion was fine in the context of what was going on. I don't have a problem. Having said that, though, the rule is the rule. We here it all the time. If it's a penalty/foul early, it's one late. If I'm a ref, do I call that? Probably not, but I would not be officiating by the book if I didn't. I don't like the rule but I agree with Stephen A that it is there to train these guys early and this has started with the NFLs lockdown of this type of thing.

It wasn't taunting...it wasn't directed at the opposing team at all. And he wasn't show-boating. Doesn't make sense.

What rule would you say he broke?

The problem is with the rule. There shouldn't be a celebration penalty. There should be a taunting penalty and that is it. If they aren't taunting, let em celebrate, for Pete's sake. I used to be so frustrated with ISU getting the excessive celebration flag when the team was real bad. I would think "Cripes, these guys don't score very often, let them celebrate it a little bit."

I hate the celebration penalties. If its not delaying the game, and its not taunting, it shouldnt be a penalty. Its a game, have fun.

Here's a youtube video if you're like me and would rather not subject yourself to Skip Bayless or Stephen A. Smith.

I agree with you. If he was doing the Deion Sanders move into the endzone I would say it's wrong. Putting one arm up in the air is nothing.

After watching it again, I don't think he got a celebration penalty at all. I think they flagged him for advancing the ball after signalling for a fair catch.

Any sort of celebration before crossing the goal line. That is basically the rule.

I don't like the rule and I don't think it should exist, but it does. I don't like hand checking called either but it exists.

Uh, I don't think that's actually a rule.

From refstripes.com

Specifically prohibited acts and conduct include:
1. No player, substitute, coach or other person subject to the rules shall
use abusive, threatening or obscene language or gestures, or engage in
such acts that provoke ill will or are demeaning to an opponent, to game
officials or to the image of the game, including but not limited to:
(a) Pointing the finger(s), hand(s), arm(s) or ball at an opponent, or
imitating the slashing of the throat.
(b) Taunting, baiting or ridiculing an opponent verbally.
(c) Inciting an opponent or spectators in any other way, such as
simulating the firing of a weapon or placing a hand by the ear to
request recognition.
(d) Any delayed, excessive, prolonged or choreographed act by which
a player (or players) attempts to focus attention upon himself (or
themselves).
(e) An unopposed ball carrier obviously altering stride as he approaches
the opponent’s goal line or diving into the end zone.
(f) Removal of a player’s helmet before he is in the team area
(Exceptions: Team, media or injury timeouts; equipment adjustment;
through play; between periods; and during a measurement for a first
down).
(g) Punching one’s own chest or crossing one’s arms in front of the chest
while standing over a prone player.
(h) Going into the stands to interact with spectators, or bowing at the
waist after a good play.

The official should be ashamed for throwing a flag on that, clearly he does not have a clear understanding of the spirit of the rule as it's written.

Penalizing celebration and taunting during play is anti-football. Period. The other team gets their feelings hurt? Hit the wiseacre. It is a perfectly legal response. Can't catch him? Trust me, slowness and giving up points feels way worse than a kid fiddling with his arms.

Penalizing it by altering the scoreboard is communist.

Dumb rule. Only idiots try to penalize a perceived lack of virtue in a game that consists of attempting to cripple other people.

Let the kids rejoice.

Jeepers. Remember when football was a game kids played for the joy of it?

God forbid a kid express excitement over winning the state title. You think this is bad? They should staff the National Spelling Bee with tranquilizer dart snipers. Those kids are out of control.
