It was Derek Schweiger, number 2 on the depth chart at center. It seemed he did fine, but we'll see what they do for Iowa. Last year, they moved Julian Good-Jones to center for that game.

Des Moines, Ia.
I'm really worried losing Newell is going to be a big loss and set the Oline play back. Man, we really need that group to improve this year. Really hope it is just a few games / weeks type injury.
If nothing else, they can stick Trevor Downing there. CMC recently said he can play all three interior spots.

Likewise.
With Schweiger starting, we’ll have two former walkons starting. Walkons blossoming into very good players isn’t unusual on the OL, but we should start to see the impact of the first couple OL classes soon.

That's tough for Newell if true. I have confidence in his game, which I can't always say about the entire group up front. Our backup OL are young, but have some pedigree. Hopefully one or more can step up in his absence.

Heard it’s definitely MCL issue but didn’t hear anything about severity

If it’s MCL, isn’t that one that they have to wait a couple of days for swelling to go down to run tests?

Just a vague recollection of knee injuries...

That’s the case for any knee injuries. But they have likely done the stability feel test on the ACL already. If it’s the MCL that is good news much better than ACL.
