Best way to save right now is higher deductibles. Minimum $2500 on your home and $1000 on your autos.

Other thing that I'm seeing. If you're willing to go to an actual cash value settlement on your roof, you can save some real money on your premium as well.

As an industry, we conditioned everyone that a new roof isn't home maintenance/upkeep and that you just wait for the right hail storm.

In a lot of ways we did this to ourselves by trying to be all things to all people rather than just taking care of catastrophic events like insurance was originally designed to do.
I can see that both ways. I would consider a wind damaged or hailed on roof a fairly catastrophic event. A roof that can’t protect your home from water damage is a pretty big deal. I certainly do also believe that people haven’t been trained/educated on how to properly maintain a roof though (that it’s not just a shingle it and forget it for 25 years type of deal). Insurance companies could probably be a part of that solution. If you were required to have your roof checked/maintained every 3-5 years to be insured, maybe that helps everyone? My hope would be that the insurance companies would also be able to help facilitate those checks.

I have country financial and like them. I've heard nothing but horror stories about state farm.
I’m an independent and I’ve seen in many cases Country Financial and Nationwide are writing less but maintenance of their book has caused smaller increases but increases still. I wrote a new client today with AAA that was great but it’s their current ideal client. 2 year old roof, less than $500k home and no auto claims. Advice I’m giving is do anything you can to avoid a claim. If you have your auto with anyone not AAA…get a AAA Membership So you can use that roadside instead of a silly claim on your auto roadside. If you can use Brite co instead of scheduling jewelry do so. Also, if you don’t have an individual agent then I suggest after a storm to do anything you can to avoid a $0 claim just because the 800 number person says you have to file a claim for them to send someone. I have seen an incredible amount of people with so many $0 claims and it’s unfortunate for that homeowner

And....what do you do when an insurance company lists a claim as collision that should have been comp. Just to be able to jack your rate. Now stuck with that on our record, and of course after switching insurances because they doubled our rate, we just have to wait years for it to go away.

Insurance companies are crooks, and hate to say but most agents do little to help. Years ago, I had 2 comp claims in a year, and my insurance company dropped that car. Not all my cars, not my house, not my motorcycle, Just the car that had 2 comp claims, Hail damage, and a racoon hit that broke the plastic bumper cover.

I asked, what I supposed to do about that one car, they said find someone else. Even though comp is not supposed to go against you. I asked why I should keep my others with them if they werent going to cover that one, they basically said they didnt care, not their problem. My local insurance man basically defended them and refused to help in any way. Needless to say Farm Bureau will never get my money again, and that local adjuster was out of a job within a year, as they did it to many people in my area at the time and not only got a reputation, but many found a new company.

But they will cry they are losing money while forking out another million to Caitlin Clark or some other worthless endorsement for an insurance company.

Well, insurance companies, at least mine, told me that they are supposed to do at least a street assessment and take pictures of all my business properyirs every 3 years. They hit about every 10-12. So they are failing in their job and why not do it with houses?

It’s been 6 years since I left Iowa for North Carolina but I remember the shock for auto insurance. My agent said you moved from one of the cheapest states to to most expensive state. I know why now, drivers in this state are the worst I’ve ever been around.

I don’t know it it’s still true but be happy Iowa is one of the cheaper states for auto insurance.

Typically I’ll request any documentation you have, including who did the work on your vehicle and send to underwriters we know and hope for the best honestly because there’s only so much an agent can do but it’s our job to at least care and to try if you as the client is able to provide that information. Currently trying to place someone with a dog bite claim that just got dropped by farm bureau. Well it was on her property but she doesn’t own the dog. But the claim was filed because her son had his dog over and scratched a neighbor on his rib area. Now I can place her but I have to try and get a written statement from her directly to the UW in hopes they remove the personal liability waiver as well. But her premium goes from $2100/year to probably $4700/yr regardless

Just remember while business owners (even insurance companies) HATE subsidies to others, they will do whatever they can to eliminate their risk of losses and transfer to others (read taxpayers) in the form of... subsidies.

Another option if you have a Visa cc is Visa Roadside Dispatch. You only pay when you use it, flat fee of $80. Although towing is limited to 5 miles. Just depends on your likelihood to need it.

I’m currently going through the process of purchasing a new home

Got quotes from Farm Bureau, Western National (through my credit union agent) and State Farm.

SF premium was lowest
FB was almost double, which was a bummer. I wanted to work with Colin Newell ha
Had this same issue, moved back to DSM in March, Colin quoted me an extremely high rate, using country financial now at about half what Colin quoted me.

Agent of 33 years here..... I'm reading your posts about claims. Best advice I can give you: If you have a potential claim on your hands DISCUSS IT WITH YOUR AGENT FIRST. When you call those 800# claims lines, or 24 hours service numbers to discuss it... they ARE going to file the claim even if you did not intend to. Boom... now you have a claim on your record regardless if it gets paid. So important to discuss with your agent first. Then proceed from there.

Surprised no one has brought up the insane amount of frivolous advertising insurers bombard us with. Looking at you Caitlin.

Ew.
This is a large part of the reason State Farm has been pissing me off. Keep jacking the rates, but can still afford: Patrick Mahomes, Chris Paul, Clark, Aaron Rodgers? How about using those millions upon millions to keep rates a bit lower?

It’s like cars are repairs (and… EVERYTHING) have gotten more expensive in the last 3 years.

Mine went up prior to that in previous years with other cars.

Yeah ......I dont know the severity of it but the claim for a dog bite even shows up as $0 paid too. Needless to say that is going to take some time before her rates come back down now because of it.

I would just offer to pay their deductible. I’ve written checks for $1200 bumpers vs filing claims.
