Ah I see the horror stories are coming out.

Frankly I have been to Iowa City for a bunch of Iowa State games and always had a good time. I know a lot of Iowa fans and tailgate with them just off Melrose and literally have never had a bad encounter (beyond a few drunk college kids yelling stupid stuff).

I would suggest going, it’s a lot of fun and Kinnick is a great venue for college football.

I have had similar experiences. I'm assuming being intermingled in a larger group with friends on both sides keeps everything a lot more relaxed and fun.

Received the AD email about purchase of Iowa away game tickets. Never been.

Advice? Is it a **** show for an ISU fan to attend? I guess it depends on whether we win.

If we decide not to go, let me know if anyone wants me to buy Captain level tickets (4 max) for them.

My mom went to a couple in the 2010-2014 range and she said she'd never go back. People tossing beer on you, etc.

She's kind of dramatic, so I'm not sure it was as bad as she thinks.

So, to make sure we don’t get stuff thrown at us or peed on we have to go with a group of Iowa fans? Guess I’m out since I don’t know a group and the few I know are too cheap to go to a game.

This has been my experience as well in both UNI and Iowa State gear down there. There are idiots in every fan base but the vast majority of Iowa fans are just your typical fans that might give you a hard time in jest but it's not any different than any other college atmosphere I've ever been in. I know I'm in the minority but the different style tailgating is kind of fun every few years as well.

Haven't been there for BB or FB in 25 yes. Will never go again and subject us to that crap. At one time it was actually tolerable and went for a lot of years.
Good luck. Guessing it's not hard to get tickets. Don't know anyone that is interested in going.
I too have had a mixed experience. Memory says I have been to 4 ISU football games in IC. My SIL played on the 2000 team. After that game my wife and I vowed never to return. Cramped seats, bad parking and very nasty fans. Very verbally abusive. I just shrug that off - but unpleasant. My daughter, who was not with us, had a full beer can thrown at her. I have, however, had some serious exchange of words with iowa fans at Jack Trice. Real jack*****.
In all fairness, we have some less than great fans too. Although, I am convinced a smaller percentage than iowa. I had an extremely close Hawkeye friend who had beer dumped on him at the Jack - plus he was spit on.
In college, a long time ago, I saw cyclone fans trying to piss on Nebraska fans.

It's all about who you are with. The tailgate may be fine but once you get up around or inside Kinnick it's pretty ruthless. FWIW I've missed two Cy Hawks at Kinnick going back to 98 and I can't say any of my trips since 2006 have been great and I'm with a bunch of Iowa friends.

If I were to go, which I wouldn’t, I would be sure to wear a neutral color without any ISU logos. Those animals are the worst.
LOL

Wear your Iowa state gear
Don’t be a drunk idiot
Don’t engage with Iowa fans that are being drunk idiots
Have fun

Based on my experiences I’d say over half of these bad interaction stories are made up or grossly exaggerated.

Sadly, most of my poor experiences in Iowa City are from grown a$$ adults...

I also try to go to an Iowa game every year with my Iowa fans and just in general they treat visitors like total crap over there.

We’ve gone to the last couple games there. Our son played for Ames High against City High for the little Cy Hawk trophy, so we just stayed and went to the game the next day. We tailgated along Melrose Court. Just watched the drunk college kids walk up and down. We got the finger and the old “F State” but our response was “Jesus still loves you!” They would look at us bewildered and some would say “good one” or “that is awesome”. Even had a few come over and drink with us.

We wore ISU gear, plus our daughter and now our son go there. We tell people that and they were pretty cool. Never had a beer or any other older person talk smack to us. Overall not a bad experience there.

I've been to a couple of games over there and you couldn't pay me to go back. Drunken A-hole fans that want to pick fights with you or throw stuff at you for wearing a red T-shirt. Plus you're tailgating in some guy's yard. No thanks.

Early 2000s as a college student I was in Iowa City for ISU vs. Iowa and did the tailgate scene. Ever since then I told myself I will never go back for an Iowa ISU game, and frankly for no other games either. Was a very uncomfortable experience, I even wore a neutral shirt knowing in advance, and it was still that uncomfortable to me.

The piss flowed over the east stand at Clyde from the student section. Probably because they needed relief after hauling the keg up there
Not me, I sat in south stands.

Last time I went college girl leans out the car window "iwahh state fuuuking suucks" then pukes all over herself and the car. Then the Seneca game 60+ year old father of a friend took a swing at me after I said 'HOW BOUT THEM HAWKEYES' he fell and almost broke his hip. I'm done-

I've attended every Cyhawk football game (in Ames and Iowa City) since 2004. I roll my eyes at all these stories about "I got a full beer poured on me and I wasn't even doing anything!"

Of course there are outliers in every fanbase. I'm not super fond of Hawk fans myself. But going to a game at Kinnick is not walking into a warzone like so many portray it to be.

Will some random drunk guy see your ISU shirt and yell "F the clowns!"? Sure. Just ignore them, yell "Go State!" and keep walking. If you really have some major confrontation, odds are you're being an a-hole too.

I have always enjoyed going to the Cyhawk game, even in Iowa City. Living in CR it's nice to have a shorter drive to the game, I get some good tailgating in, and I usually have good seats because I just buy off Stubhub when the game is in IC.

If you like watching the Cyclones in person, go to the game. Ignore all these fearmongering tall tales.

It has been a while, but it's a great feeling walking out of Kinnick after an ISU victory. Just remember, it's only a game. Don't be a **** to Iowa fans and most of them won't be a **** to you.
