The wife was suppose to leave at 6:45am this morning to drive to the Twin Cities from Council Bluffs for work. We got a little snow but looks like DOT is recommending to stay out of central Iowa. Looks like the wind will be blowing all day here... Are road conditions along I-35 suppose to get better as the day goes on today?

Drove from Iowa Falls to Clarion. Yeah, if you don't have to go anywhere, don't do it. Roads are terrible and visibility is zero

I made it to work, but now I feel stupid for driving. There was good visibility when I left but the whiteout is in pockets and you never know when it will hit.

Send her up I 29 to Sioux Falls and across on I 90? Sure it will take longer but it should be safer, maybe?

EDIT: looks like it's ****** in Sioux Falls too..... She is screwed.... Maybe catch a flight if its peril she gets there?

Roads were fine, it's just the white out squalls. Depending on the traffic in front of you, and if they are going 20-30 mph and are brake checking every 5-10 seconds, that is when you get into trouble as following distance disappears in white out conditions if you don't leave enough distance between you and the car in front of you.

Thanks for the response. They are going to wait till noon and decided if it is safe to leave. Any more info will be appreciated as the morning goes along.

Not worth it in my opinion. Have her stay home and error on the safe side!

I drove from Forest City to north of Thompson at 0430 and I wouldn't do it again.

According to DOT roads in southern Minnesota are very bad too. I'd wait.

I drove from Cresco to west of Riceville and it was fine, until you came upon a white out spot, and then you couldn't see anything. Comes up suddenly. Sounds like it's worse as you go west.

Yeah.... 90 is never a viable option when there's blowing snow.

It's windy as hell in the metro, but visibility wasn't bad. Then again that was two hours ago on my way to work.

Won't see huge improvements in blowing/drifting snow until after sunset. Even then, it will take some time for roads to return to being dry. Good luck to you and your wife. Dreading my 40 mile commute at noon.
