Is this years' team better than we thought?

Add in that North Dakota, for an FCS team, is actually pretty decent...beating Montana, along with their other 2 wins. We will see later in the season if they are really better as they still have games against NDSU, South Dakota State, and UNI. Certainly not a bottom dweller. Arkansas State may very well win their conference too...time will tell. Bottom line is that the first 3 teams have certainly gotten ISU ready for conference play, where Campbell has proven his chops over the previous seasons. Let's enjoy the ride, one game at a time.
Veering off-topic here, but I think UNI might suck. A good UNI team would have put up a fight at least against a bad Hawaii team.

North Dakota is a great team....they might take L's to SDSU and NDSU but that's nothing to fret about...they beat a very good Montana team a couple weeks ago....for Arkansas State, they could make a bowl but I'd put JMU as the favorite right now to win the SBC

UNI is just not as good as they were in the late 2000s to early to mid 2010s.....really the late 2010s is when they started to become just mediocre to flat out bad....they'll always finish around the middle of the MVFC but SDSU, NDSU, UND, and USD seem to have risen to being the clear top 4 teams in the conference

I worry about the environment at both of those games, if I'm being honest.

I don't think most fans are going to be hyped about playing UCF unless they rack up some marquee wins and are highly ranked when they come to town. That starts this Saturday when they host Team Prime in the national spotlight.

And the joint should be rocking for Farmageddon, but it's always hard to expect a super huge and engaged crowd over Thanksgiving break. If it's a "win and in" situation with the CCG on the line, it'll be electric. If it's simply to avoid a third or fourth conference loss I suspect it'll be pretty mild.
If we're 6-0 going into the UCF game, we're most likely top 12 in the nation. UCF is likely going to roll Colorado this week and then plays @ Florida and vs. Cincinnati. I think they're no worse than 5-1 coming into Jack Trice in a few weeks.

They were up 28-3 on Arkansas State. The talking point last week of "they only lost to michigan by 10" was annoying. That wasn't the true picture of that game
If we are playing that game ASU missed two makeable FGs in the first half. They definitely could have been in the game at half time.

If those are our respective records it should be a great environment, but I still think the overwhelming majority of our fanbase will struggle to ever view UCF as a game to get excited for unless they're near the top of the conference year after year (which I think they very well could). Most people just don't pay close enough attention.

Very true. But I do think this will be a ranked matchup and folks will show up and show out because of it.

If they run the ball like they did against Nebraska, they will finish the MVC season near the top.

If Iowa State is near the top 10, we could be playing a winless conference foe and the place would be packed....and I think with UCF being still newer to the conference, their fans will make the trip to Ames (they traveled pretty well for all their road games last season).

I have season tickets so I'll be going and I also think Iowa State fans want to showcase how awesome our tailgating and game day environment is to the newcomers....UCF will be the first of the new additions to experience Jack Trice Stadium

I don't think the team is better than we thought.

I think the Kansas schools are worse than we thought, and Utah without Rising doesn't scare anyone.

UCF already beat TCU and their next three games are vs. Colorado, @ Florida, and vs. Cincinnati. I'd be shocked if they don't go 2-1 in their next three and are 5-1 coming into Ames.

I think the limited evidence has shown that what most people thought the strengths of the team (secondary, receivers, DL, and QB) are as strong, or stronger than we thought. OL depth and Konrardy looking legit gives me confidence. I think the OL will still be able to pass protect well, at a minimum, and with Noel, Higgins, and Brahmer, we'll be able to move the ball even if the run game isn't stellar. Not very many teams will be able to keep Noel and Higgins from making big plays if they have to cover them for any length of time.

I know it's pretty early in the season, but that victory over the Hawks was massive man!

I may be drinking the Koolaide, but if we win against Houston on the road and then beat Baylor?

We may be in the discussion about title hopes and playoff discussion. Our schedule conference wise, is really favorable. Utah, maybe K-State huge roadblocks-- you could argue Baylor. It's attainable...
We are a missed 54 yard field goal away from having this conversation. Grinding out wins in close games will define this season, IMO. So far so good. My mvps so far are Porter and Higgins.

It's not better than I thought. I was thinking 10 or 11 wins if things go right. So far they're looking good. We all know that Campbell's teams get better. Just enjoy the ride folks.
And ****will happen. Hang w
ISU got things rolling last week. It's not negative to think they still really need to be pressed vs. someone really good to find out what they can do.

For the OP's original question of whether ISU is better than what maybe I personally thought, I've been impressed with, for example, the younger LBs as they get rolling and someone like Higgins can be straight dominant.
and ****will happen. Hang with it.

We were 3-0 in the same spot in 2022 coming off a blowout win vs Ohio.
This is true. It’s also clear watching the games so far that this years team is overall more competent than that 2022 one was so far. That 2022 team looked horrendous for a half against SEMO and looked horrendous for all 4 quarters against Iowa. Much more positive feeling this year.

Here is how I'm looking at things the rest of the way:

@Houston, Win
Baylor, Win
@WVU, Tossup
UCF, Tossup
Texas Tech, Win
"@"Kansas, Win
Cincinnati, Win
@utah, Loss
Mildcats, Tossup

Then take one of those wins and make it a tossup to be conservative. Floor of 7-5, ceiling of 11-1. Can't remember the last time I looked at our conference schedule and said there's only one game I think we probably lose. Probably never.

If they get to 6-0, THEN I'll be looking like the Texas Tech bell ringer :oops:
