Figuring out how much time to dedicate to ST in practice is not easy. It's easy to say "practice it more," but the reality is that ST don't have the same impact as offense or defense, and there's finite practice time. But it's also true that the difference in elite and horrible ST is usually only a play or two each game, and the rate of success of kick returns against ISU, failure of ISUs punt fielding, and some of the big field position swings due to our punt teams on both sides of the ball is pretty incredible.

I know the Iowa punter is one of the best in the country. Is the Baylor kid too?
These two units regularly made up chunks of yards against us in the field position game, which was not good.

Blum said on their Sunday pod that he averaged something like over 15 yards more than the guys normal average on Saturday, for whatever reason. Which is part of the reason the Noel was playing up where he was.

It's early yet and we'll see how the season plays out but I wonder if the complete lack of any rush by the ISU punt team is allowing the opposing punters to line up their steps better and air it out.

I don't know anything about how to punt, but would it be an advantage to be able to focus on catching the ball knowing beforehand there will be no rush and then start your steps to punt rather than a normal routine of trying to catch the punt and start your punt routine at the same time?

I haven't seen anyone say this yet, but another guy that didn't have a great game on Saturday? Rory Walling.

Both on the kickoff return and the big punt return, he took bad angles and tried to arm tackle Ebner. The kickoff return he dove and actually took out 2 of our own guys who had at least a chance at getting to Ebner. During the punt return he ran past him and tried to arm tackle him as he cut it back. I'm not a special teams expert, but in both cases it looked like he was out of position to contain him. Now to Walling's credit, Ebner is an All American returner for a reason...

Dude's been a fantastic player for us over the years, but Saturday was not his best game for sure.

Absolutely. That's basically like taking a bag of balls to a high school field when you're home for break and practicing.

The reason is we give the opposition all the time in the world to get the punt off. Not a fluke at this point

Dunn attempted 2 rugby kicks against Iowa in 2018 which were his first punts of his career. It didn't go well and he never rugby kicked again. He finished 2018 averaging 40 yards and nearly half were downed within the 20 yard line. He had an achilles injury and was out for 2019, otherwise I expect he would have kept the starting job.

I'm going to keep defending Dunn from the hot takes on CF that are based on poor memory and not the facts that are in front of us. And I'm apparently going to have to keep doing it until the heat death of the universe. Out of 68 attempts Dunn averages 40.4 yards with 2 touchbacks, 29 inside the 20 yard line, 13 punts over 50 yards, and only one blocked punt in his career.

He's not perfect. But he's a damn good punter and this board should appreciate him more, IMO.

Edit:
Rivera, who I never heard this board ***** about had 101 attempts, averaged 40.6 yards, 7 touchbacks, 41 inside the 20, 18 over 50 yards, and 0 blocks.

Remind me again what's the difference between these punters?

Well Dunn has played under more scrutiny and his mistakes seem to come at very inopportune times. Just like the Suez canal ship captain. He was good for 99 out of 100 trips it's the 100th that people remember. Having bad punts against Iowa is a good way to be remembered as a marginal punter no matter what your other numbers are.

Dunn is money at practice and during warm ups. Just needs to bring it to the game.

Seems like Rivera would consistently get more loft/hang time on his balls. Better for the coverage unit.

I'm glad that CMC tried somebody new last night. Mixed results, but at least it muted the anti-Dunn crowd (including me).

Will CMC have Dunn back out there for K-State?

Not exactly sure.
Even his shorter punts at least got some hang time. I don’t think either of them were returned.
His short two traveled 35 yards, probably why there wasn’t a return. His only long one was returned fairly well.

One thing I noticed over the last couple games is Walling has been as bad as the punters. If he doesn’t get the tackle as the gunner, he needs to hesitate the returner or slow him up. He has been blowing by the return guy and letting them have an unabated chance to get to top speed before the rest make it down. Against Baylor he took an angle and then dove taking out two of our defenders that had a chance to tackle the kick returner. I’m ready to find a new special teams guy if he doesn’t start doing what he is supposed to do.
