Saw this on ESPN, should we feel bad for this guy? Spoiler alert: NO

http://espn.go.com/chalk/story/_/id/14598888/bettor-seeks-162930-payout-15-leg-parlay

A bettor at the William Hill sportsbook at the Downtown Grand Casino was one win away from turning a $5 wager into a $162,930 payday. The bettor needed a win by No. 1 Oklahoma over No. 19 Iowa State on Monday night to complete a 15-leg parlay and win William Hill's multisport progressive jackpot.
The Cyclones wouldn't let it happen, though. They knocked off Oklahoma 82-77in Ames, Iowa. Don't call it an upset, though. Iowa State was a 2-point favorite over the top-ranked Sooners at most sportsbooks.
The bettor had already picked 14 straight-up winners over the weekend. The selections were the New England Patriots, Arizona Cardinals, Carolina Panthersand Denver Broncos in the NFL; Villanova, Virginia Commonwealth, Baylor,North Dakota State, Florida, San Diego State, Cal Poly, Creighton andWisconsin in college basketball; and the San Jose Sharks in NHL action.
The $162,930 prize would have been the second largest single payout of progressive jackpot at William Hill, according to director of marketing Michael Grodskey. With Iowa State's win, the jackpot climbs to $180,250 next week.
It was not known whether the bettor hedged the bet. If not, the bettor lost $5.

Never go in against a Cyclone when Hilton Magic is on the line!

He should have realized the home team and its success in Hilton.

Well, if the guy was smart he walked away with like $60K or $70K regardless. Assuming he found a place that would let him bet that much on the ISU moneyline if he usually isn't a high roller. I would think a casino would let him use that 15 leg parlay ticket as a form of collateral, but I honestly don't know.

Obviously you hedge the bet. The dude is an idiot if he didn't.

Totally agree with you, but one would need $100,000 to hedge that bet properly. Then you have to decide if you pick Iowa State straight up or -2. Either way though I think I would figure out a way to hedge that bet and make sure you are walking away with either 100,000K or 160,000K.

What an idiot. Why would you pick OU to win at Hilton? Especially when we we're leading most of the game at OU until we lost steam at the end.

If he bet $100k on ISU to hedge and lost, he'd have won the $160k and lost the $100k. He'd walk with $60k.

So in your example, he's walking with $100k or $60k.

You realize OU was ranked #1, we had lost 3 of 5 going into last night, lost to Baylor at home and lost to OU already once this year? I wouldn't necessarily consider the guy an idiot when taking into account all of those facts.

You make gambling sound easy. It's not like they don't take Hilton and our past results into account.

If I was picking that 15 game parlay, the OU/ISU game is one that I wouldn't even think about touching.

If anything I would have taken Duke to win last night, not OU. It's a moot point since Duke also lost, but that pick makes more sense than taking OU.

Could he pick any 15 games? If so, why pick ours?

Interesting that he picked Wisconsin at home against Mich St, but didn't pick us at home against Oklahoma. Of the two you would have to think our win was more likely, but such is gambling.

I read yesterday that it would be hard to hedge... In order to hedge, you need a large sum of money. Where do you get that money? A bank. Banks are closed on MLK Day, so he had less options than usual. In order to find a hedge, he would have had to sacrifice quite a bit up front, because it woudl have had to come from a Vegas money broker.
