For those that think we got outcoached (I'm not in that group)-- we missed 17 threes. Most of which were uncontested. Georges missed many baseline bank shots that he usually makes all day long. We make two of these shots and we move on.

The only thing I wish we would have done more of when the 3s were not going down, drive to the basket. We had the talent to do it.

UAB shot 42% for the season and won 19 games. It was also us getting destroyed on the boards.
Yeah, exactly what I'm saying. Our defense held them to under 35% and forced 13 turnovers. They scored 60 points on 80+ possessions. Not exactly lighting up the scoreboard. The problem was ISU shot pretty poor (specifically Naz and Georges) which killed us. If you take out Naz and Georges, we shot 43%. With them, we shot 36%. 6-24 from two of our most productive offensive players is a killer.

If people are being realistic....there is not one false thing on this post. But yes....you'll get killed for the post anyway. This isn't really the forum for honesty....and a lot of folks here like it that way.

im not going to blast Hoiberg over one game, while part of me feels like he got out coached, IMO I think we had a lot going on with this roster at the end of the year that made winning very difficult vs even UAB. I think our warts of possible malcontents, possible injuries, guys not knowing their roles, laziness, and just poor bench play decided to bite us in one 40 minute game.
Yes - it's not breaking news that Fred is a laid back coach. It was Corey Lucious, I believe, who said that he told potential recruits that visited ISU that "Coach lets you play your own game, and isn't on your *** all the time."
This is how we get transfers, people...

But.....Edozie. Lol. People want to find all kinds of things, especially things that can't be quantified like, "trying hard", "effort", "hustle", subjective things that just can't be unproven but also can't be proven. No one wants to hear about our best players not shooting the ball in the basket being the reason we lost. For some reason people just don't believe that shooting the ball through the hoop, the most, is what basketball boils down to.

What I'll hold CFH accountable for is kids not fully understanding their roles (even though I think it should have been painfully obvious what they were), and kids saying they overlooked or took a team for granted.

Had a nice conversation with Terry Woods yesterday and asked him, "What would coach Orr have done if you verbally said you overlooked Nebreaska or Colorado and lost?" He said (paraphrasing) "oh my god...he'd have killed us".

and Orr didn't have the success hoiberg has had. So maybe the getting on their *** part is not the way to go. Maybe that is why the Orr teams were so damn good on the road?

Many have joked that we should have spotted UAB 10 pts to start the game...and there is some truth to that...when we played with a sense of urgency it seemed we were more fluid.

I do agree with the press....I wish at times we used it more to generate some offense/dictate pace a bit.

I trust Fred and his staff are reviewing tape of the year, looking for things that can equate to more efficiency for next year, etc.

I never said play Edozie 40 minutes. However, we were getting destroyed on the boards. UAB shot 35% but think about how put back they had. You have to rebound.

Except there's plenty in his post that's wrong. He said we were a four seed and he didn't mention rebounding, which was kind of a big deal. He said we weren't ready to play even though we jumped out to a lead early on, which would point to the team being ready. Later in the game we started missing shots. That's not a lack of preparation.

Way up there
People think Fred's teams are susceptible to teams with size, in reality its the exact opposite. IMO we are built to attack teams with size by using versatile bigs. When we run into teams that are smaller and that can match our athleticism we struggle. This season UAB and South Carolina are perfect examples. Teams we have much more talent than were able to kind of stymie our offense bc they were the quicker team. So if you can think deep enough to see past the CUSA vs Big 12 debate, you'd see that UAB was actually not a great matchup for us. That said, if we have even an average day shooting we win by double digits. We got all the shots we would normally want, we just didn't knock them down. Fred cant shoot it for them.

Stop obsessing over this game everyone. We lost; time to move on. Every year really good teams with final four aspirations lose early in the tournament. We just happened to be one of those teams this year. It's called march madness for a reason. Frankly, if we expect to make the tourney as a high seed every year we should always be ready for this possibility. It happened to Virginia, Baylor and Villanova this year too...

Yeah maybe Fred could have done something different. Maybe players could have played better/harder...whatever. Upsets happen and it doesn't mean we weren't a good team or that Fred can't coach. Remember when Mike Krzyzewski lost to Lehigh a few years back? Stop throwing hissy fits.

A lot of that stuff is really nit picky, and "obvious" to arm chair coaches. But I can totally agree that when this team really came to play, they only lost twice this year (@KU, @OU). It seemed to be from a lack of preparation and leadership. It can't "all" be on either the coaches or the players. But they buck does stop at the coach. Fred is still learning and evolving, and will only get better every year.

Rebounding, or lack of it, was a HUGE part of the reason the Cyclones lost though. UAB didn't perform well offensively either. They kept themselves in the game with their rebounding. You want to discredit Edozie because he doesn't have as much talent as the starters and that's your justification for leaving him on the bench... the problem with that is the starters lost to a group of guys with less talent than them too.

I'm not saying Edozie was the answer, but I totally understand giving him a few minutes to see if he can use his work ethic and bulk to try to change the momentum on the glass. You always get up on your pedastle and preach like you have more basketball knowledge than everyone else. You make comments like "this is how I know you have no basketball knowledge" and it comes across as incredibly egotistical. The truth is these are all opinions. Making comments like that doesn't prove your opinions to be anymore accurate than someone else's.

You must have something against players who outwork everyone else. Pretty sure you're the same guy who tried claiming Uthoff is better than White even though their performances on the floor proved differently. Skill wise, yes, Uthoff has more talent than White, but he certainly didn't impact the game like White did.

how many teams didn't lose games they shouldn't? Not that dumb many. Expecting perfection is stupid and idiotic.

I've now watched the game twice and read almost every single post about the UAB loss. I'm a longtime ISU fan going back to Barry Stevens. I don't live in Iowa anymore but a major metro city, so here is a little detached perspective. I love Fred and think he is a really good coach and could be great one day. I watched every single minute of every all but three games early in the season. However, this loss falls on him. I think the following points need to get made:

1. The team wasn't ready to play. This is on the coach. He has to make sure they are ready to go for the biggest stage of their careers.

2. Their problem was defense the entire year, especially the inability to get over screens. This never got fixed and cost them on the last UAB OB play. This is a coaching deficiency if it occurs over and over. Defense matters especially in the tournament.

3. Fred did nothing to adjust the tempo. You can press for steals and/or tempo. Fred never tried to push the pace with a deeper bench against a 19 win team.

4. They were getting killed on the boards and Edozie never got off the bench. 5-10 minutes of him knocking some people around might have helped. It's not enough to stay close against a UAB, he should have been upset they weren't destroying them making a statement.

5. At no time during the year did Fred ever really get on anyone. Last year he had Ejim and a 25 year old Kane to do it on the floor but not this year. He needs to know when to fill that hole. Calipari has multiple coddled McD AA and he said in an interview before halftime when they weren't playing well that either you perform or you sit. Players want to be challenged. Calm is great but everyone once in while you need to get in someone's grill.

6. Matt Thomas was playing well and sat in the 2nd half. If Long isn't hitting shots then he is liability on the floor because he can't cover anyone. Why not make a substitution? It's one and done. If your Thomas and you play when you aren't performing but sit when you are: what is the message?

7. It was a good season, but the tournament is what matters. If we want a nationally prominent program then you have to perform in the tourney.

If were an 8 seed and this happened, fine. We were a four against a team that had to win its conference tourney to even get into the dance. Fred had nearly a week to prepare. Jared Haase seemed to figure out. He called timeouts before TV timeouts, so ISU could never get into a rhythm. Nice coaching and I'm not saying he is better.

Go ahead lose your minds.

Every win and every loss is on the coaches AND the team. Ever time, without exception.

So if we would have gotten more rebounds, but made the same shots/amount of shots, and UAB made the same shots/amount of shots who wins the game?

And Uthoff is better at basketball than White.
