Don't be dumb.

I can guarantee you that nobody knows who will be our starting QB next season. Not even Paul Rhoads.

I can also guarantee you that Tiller is #1 as of this moment. No doubt. If our coaching staff annoints a JUCO QB to the #1 spot ahead of a guy that has been with this program for 3 years busting his tail off awaiting his chance... then we need new coaches. That is not fair to Jerome Tiller whatsoever.... and if that were the case, I'd transfer right now if I were James Capello or Jared Barnett.

That's not to say that Jerome Tiller will be our starting QB next year... not at all. But he will be going into spring... and he should be... until (or if) he gets beaten out by anyone else on the roster.

And do NOT discount Capello, Barnett, Richardson, etc either. Everyone will have a shot to prove themselves. As they should.

But you don't put in 3 years of blood and sweat in the program to be told you're getting the boot for some JUCO kid that the coaches haven't even seen practice once yet as a Cyclone. Those 3 years of faith and hard work to this school and coaches HAS to mean something. If not, then why would any kid put in the time and effort to get to the top?

Tiller is the guy... unless someone can knock him off. And I'm sure Tiller will welcome the competition if he's a competitive and confident kid... which I'm sure he is. But Rhoads is NOT going to annoint some JUCO kid ahead of Tiller without at least seeing him practice with his own two eyes on the Cyclone practice field going up against much better competition. It just isn't going to happen.

So... being in the program is > than talent at a position. Makes a ton of sense.

That is the dumbest thing I have heard in a while. If you want to win in the BCS, you don't pander to loyalty above talent. Thinking that that's the way it should be in the BCS is asinine.

The only reason to start a new QB is to improve the passing game.
I want to see Richardson or Steele at Quarterback,
why?
My opinion is that Tiller can run, but he can not throw that great.
We already have 3 running backs I am happy with,
If we can add the passing game,
It can only be better for Iowa State.

truth be told, we don't know how talented any of our qb's are at the d1 level outside of maybe 4 games out of tiller-a good sample size yes, but realistically he wasn't that much of a step down from a 5th year senior in arnaud.

i seem to remember a lot of threads/posts stating how talented this tiller kid was and how arnaud had better improve or else, etc... and now i'll bet some of those same posters are the ones ranting and raving about jantz. is ridiculous.

the staff brought him in with the hopes he is better than tiller-yes. every kid they bring in they hope is better then someone on the staff, but until they see him in their practices, they are not going to really know what they have-especially with a guy with onlyh 1 year of juco experience at the position to his name.

lol, I think Tiller will ultimately win the job as well. But thats not to say Jantz doesn't play quite a bit as well. I think the Tiller hate as of late is pretty unwarrented. give him the wr's that can get open and catch the ball, and you will see a whole new player. Not to mention the man takes care of the ball for the most part. I am obviously pulling for whoever wins out, but imo, Tiller takes the reins. But then again, it's all about the work ethic in the offseason and spring camp. Can't wait to see how it all goes.

If you have more than quarterbacks, you have none.

I think that we're firing over each other on opinions here. Basically, all I"m saying is that there is no way that we bring in Jantz if he doesn't have the very real possibility of being the starter. Saying that someone who has been with the program for X years should get first dibs is the worst way to go about finding a starter.

And this is different from saying that Tiller is the leader right now how? You honestly think that you recruit a JUCO that doesn't have some sort of edge or reason to get a scholly if the next guy is already on roster?

Tiller is the leader right now. He has to be. I don't know how anyone could possibly say Jantz is the leader. He hasn't done a single thing in D1 football. I think Jantz was recruited because the staff feels there is a possibility he will be the starter. That's completely different than saying he is the leader. Tiller is the leader and Jantz has a good shot at taking it over. Saying Tiller has lost the job and Jantz is the starter with all the certainty in the world is ridiculous. No one knows what Tiller is going to do in the offseason. Maybe he makes a tremendous leap. Maybe Jantz is amazing. We don't know. That was my point in terms of the race but Jantz has to do enough to beat out Tiller, not the other way around.

I like Richardsen as much as anyone, but I don't think he will be in the race next year. It's a four person race.

One thing is for sure. Whoever get's 2nd in this race will be the better QB.

And Tiller is the "leader" because he's been in the system, even though he hasn't done anything? He may be a favorite for the starting job, but he isn't the guy that has the job to lose. No one has the job right now, and no one can actually lose it. I'll be ****** if I find out that some kid has an "inside track" to becoming a starter because he's worked with them before.

Ok so if everyone performs exactly even, then who is the starter? It's Tiller. That's how it works. If you have someone who has been there longer than you and you do not perform better than they do, they keep the job.

And this is a mute point until we see what happens next spring. I wouldn't annoit anyone the starter right now. To me its wide open with 4-5 guys all having an equal shot and my the best man win. I don't think anyone has any edge right now wether they have been here for 3, 2, 1 years or 1 month.

I guess that was sort of my point in the first place. I just think saying Tiller or anyone else is already out of it is premature at this point. I also don't think we will know who the starter will be until the first game of the season. I just hope someone pulls away from the pack. I don't want this thing dragging out for the first three weeks.

Please explain how he actually is better than everyone else on the field. He may be perceived that way, but he has no control over anyone else being more talented than he is. Key word: perceived.

Oh, I see what you're saying. Basically, you're saying that as long as Tiller doesn't **** the bed, he's the starter. Not that he's the best candidate.

If Tiller was "the man" as some are saying, why would the coaches bring in a JUCO when we already have Capello, Barnett and at least two QB recruits? We don't have enough slots left to fill the list of players at other positions the coaches want to bring in.
Tiller may end up winning the battle, but based on Jantz coming in, Tiller's lack of efficiency passing, (when we have a passing offense), I highly doubt he will be the starting QB next season. He may, but I don't think he's the leader going in. Looks like a open competition. And that's exactly what PR said.

I think this is probably close to accurate. I have a feeling Tiller is going to start the first few games with Jantz being an option if things aren't going well. My instinct tells me that the staff feels that #1 isn't 100% yet and options 3&4 that were here last year aren't ready to be #2's thus Jantz was brought in to sure up at least the top two spots.

Well you did pretty much say it was Tillers to lose since he has been in this system for awhile.

Other than that I sure hope we are not still looking for our starter come week 3.

To be fair, coach said that last year's battle was wide open as well, and we all knew who was going to be ISU's starting qb this past fall. I said it above. I have a feeling the staff is hoping to catch lightning with Jantz but knew they needed a number 2 even if Jantz doesn't win the starting spot.

Wrong. If you've been going to school for X years, you automatically have an advantage over the kid going there for X-1 years. THEY KNOW THE SYSTEM!

I didn't say that at all. Don't put words in my mouth. I never said he was better than anyone else. This whole argument is hypothetical. I have never said Tiller will be the starter or should be the starter because he has been here 3 years. If anything I said his experience should put him over the top.

If Tiller was "the man" as some are saying, why would the coaches bring in a JUCO when we already have Capello, Barnett and at least two QB recruits? We don't have enough slots left to fill the list of players at other positions the coaches want to bring in.

The whole problem is that there is no way to predict improvement. I mean, Barnett could take a huge leap and beat out everyone. Tiller could make a huge leap. Jantz could. What I mean to say is that anyone could come out of this thing and I just think it's premature to say someone is completely out of it. I have no problem predicting one or the other will start.

This is incorrect. CPR said over and over again that AA was his starting quarterback. He did that at the preseason ISU events, in the media and virtually every appearance. This year he says it's open competition. However, I do find it interesting that they used a scholarship on Jantz favorite receiver at the junior college.
