did anybody else see that interview tonight? I don't know if he's in a weird way to promote his movie or if he's stoned or what. Freaky

I thought it was a joke, then realized how pissed Dave was.
He did give the brilliant ending smack to him: "Joaquin, I'm sorry you couldn't be here tonight."

It's all a joke/hoax, Casey Affleck's doing a documentary about a actor losing his mind and dropping off the map, going to be at Sundance for the hippies and mormans.

Untitled Joaquin Phoenix Documentary (2010)

I think Dave was in on it, and the crowd, or they wouldn't have been laughing like they were, and would have been scared to death instead.

I have a feeling that he was forced to do some press in his last contract for the film he was suppose to be promoting and decided he was just going to give the worst interview ever so they won't bother him anymore.

Reminds me of when Jim Carey showed up at (I think) the MTV Movie Awards quite a while ago

I don't know. It was quite similar to the Farrah Fawcett interview that Letterman alluded to at the end. The crowd was laughing at her that night as well, and she was completely lost. I also remember John Goodman doing a crazy interview on there once. I think Dave knew better than to give him too much ribbing, though, for fear of being eaten...

Oh, and Tracey Morgan...

I'm not really sure what we can attribute this performance to, whether it be drugs, an incredible joke (and acting), or just craziness, but either way I'd say it is one of the most entertaining interviews on the Late Show ever. You don't really know if you should be laughing hysterically or cringing in pain.
