Eric and Pete Taylor really were the voice of the frustrated fan back in the day. I can still hear their frustration.
Pete had always had a passion for ISU. You could hear the passion, just as we do with John and Eric. That's what we will need when the time comes. Someone local who has a history with the school, or at least knowledge of the culture here. There are so many announcers who are good at calling the game, but lack passion or legitimate excitement.

It'll be someone from a mid-major with a strong pxp background that's done it on a consistent basis.

That's how Learfield rolls.

You'll be pissed at first and then realize the new guy is pretty damn good.

I listen to tons of them on varsity app now. Some are pretty bad.

The Kansas guy is like an SNL skit of how I’d make fun of a play by play guy.

Cincy’s guy sounds EXACTLY like Pete Taylor.

I really like the guy at Florida State. Jeff Culhane.

He was at NDSU before he took that job and he's just gotten better and better. Can't imagine trying to sell that product this year.

One thing is for certain. When the Godfather decides to hang up his mic, Iowa State does not have to look far to find his successor. Brent Blum did an incredible job handling the play by play for the Maui tournament. After listening to him call the three games, it's hard to believe play by play isn't his full time job. I LOVE listening to John, but it's great to know that whenever he decides to retire, we've got an outstanding replacement waiting in the wings.
Onlyfans has given @brentblum a ton of confidence....

I'm not saying it shouldn't be Blum.

But you know who has gotten surprisingly good (because I didn't think he was great for a few years? The guy that does the WBB play by play.

Man Pete Taylor was legend. You could tell within 3 words how we were doing if you tuned in and had no idea what was going on.

John was the best fit.... Loved him on the TV calls with Gary Thompson back before Pete passed away.

The late great Ray Christensen for the Gophers was like that. Tuned in once decades ago on a road trip back from Iowa. Could tell within the first minute that it REALLY BAD without hearing the score. They were playing Nebraska in the Huskers heyday.

Looked that game up:

On September 17, 1983, No. 1 Nebraska, coming off a 44–6 week one win over No. 4 Penn State, traveled to Minneapolis. Nebraska racked up 790 yards of offense, nearly 600 of them rushing, en route to an 84–13 win over the Gophers, the worst loss in Minnesota history. - Wiki

I may be in the minority but Walter's is just ok to me...

If Paul Allen is 10/10, John is 5/10
Paul Allen is great for professional football. He's a treasure for the Vikings play by play...but he's a little too crazy for a college basketball announcer IMO.
