Do we recruit kickers much or do we pretty much go with whoever shows up? We’ve missed kicks in both games we have lost that could of possibly won it for us. Not just yesterday but the last 15 yrs we could of won some important games.

Basing this on two fails from 49 yards? College percentages in P5 from that distance are right around 50%. Not like we are missing the high percent 30 yard shots. One had the distance but was a little wide. The other the line was totally blown up.

Would have been nice to make one of them but we lost by two points so you can cherry pick 20 individual plays that "lost" us the game. If all you can muster in a half is two 49 yard attempts I think there is plenty of room on the offense. Maybe start by getting our guy within the 80-85% range of 30-35 yards. Hell, if they hadn't flubbed their own point after kick we didn't even have a lead in this game.

IIRC from what I've heard, kickers and punters even at the pro level aren't really "coached". They're pretty self-driven. I think that's why you tend not to see major 'development' out of them, either they're very good (particularly in-game), or they're not.

Some of that comes to technique as well, like ISU found out yesterday getting a kick blocked by 4 guys that penetrated the line. Can't blame the kicker for that.

There just aren't that many truly reliable kickers in the world. Even NFL teams stuggle to find them. Its not that rare that a college team has shaky field goal kicking. I till think teams should be more aggressive going for it on 4th down when in field goal range.

I couldn’t agree more with your last sentence. But then keep that in mind with your 3rd down play calling.

We have a scholarship kicker in Narveson but he must not be all that good if he can't beat out a couple of walk-ons.

Last summer the story was the competition between Chris Francis and Narveson for the place kicking spot and Assailley beat them both. And he was 7 of 8 before yesterday.

Conner is a pretty good college kicker inside 40. If they want to continue to try the longer ones, why not see if one of the other guys can hit the deep ones.

I have a feeling they’ve see 100’s of kicks in practice from every available kicker. The players still need to earn it in practice.

Not saying they should do it, but you see it on other teams where they sometimes have the "long" field goal guy. I was at the Alamodome when he nailed his 50 yarder, so I know given the right conditions he can get some distance.

I think the kickers are okay, certainly not outstanding. What bugs me is that UNI's second string guy made 2 50 yarders against ISU and Iowa's kick is the son of a former ISU kicker I think.

Iowa's kicker is a walk-on from North Carolina. Don't think there is an ISU connection. Sure hope not.
