Lack of expansion strengthens and solidifies the conference

The networks shut it down because they are profiting from the current arrangement. That same dynamic is what prevents Oklahoma or Texas from jumping ship when the GOR expires. If they jump ship and the conference collapses, the networks lose the current arrangement from which they benefit and all they get in return is Texas or Oklahoma with far fewer tv sets than the current Big 12 has - in a different conference.

There are no viable expansion candidates because the networks would lose money and the conference falling apart would cost the networks money. Get used to the current Big 12 - it will be that way for a long time.

Why haven't these President's and AD's took it upon themselves to fix this greed that is basically destroying college football? I don't care if it means realignment and super conferences, these people are in charge of fixing the problem. That shouldn't mean taking advantage of the broken system and draining it to the last drop.

I'd like to believe the Big12 knows what it's doing, for now. Hopefully things will stabilize w/ time, but I doubt things will stay the same. There will be changes of some sort.

What we all don't want to happen is what I heard on Sports talk radio, coming home from work today. The pundit (a sports journalist for the SEC, being interviewed, so take that for what it's worth), said the Big12 is a joke right now, in turmoil, and will dissolve as we know it, in what 7 yrs or so when the current agreement ends, or sooner, and be absorbed (partially or not?) into 4 super-conferences.

So the beat goes on. I hope saner minds (for our sake) take over soon. Unfortunately it's all about the "green" now a days, regional rivalries be damned. Shame.

We are better off with no expansion right now. I do not want to add G5 teams to our P5 conference. That hurts ISU

Nope. Not in any way does it hurt ISU. No team added was going to be demonstrably better in athletics than ISU so that helps us as far as results go. Additionally, the Big 12 is dead in the water right now. I've tried to spin it and heard some good friends work at that as well. The reality is the Big 12 will not be here in 10 years. As you can see with the memo that ESPN reported on, very little cohesion exists in the conference right now. It sucks to be here, but the Big 12 was slow on the initial round of expansion and got beat. This latest mess just weakened the position more, and once OU or UT leave, the rest of us are hoping for a soft landing. Probably in a G5 conference so that alternative is much worse than adding 1 or 2 G5 teams to our conference.

SEC "pundit" with an ego larger than his IQ.

Texas and Oklahoma aren't going anywhere. Let's say Oklahoma tries to move to the SEC. ESPN gains nothing from the move because they already have Oklahoma. The only impact is negative as the Big 12 from which ESPN currently benefits is destabilized. If ESPN doesn't see a benefit it won't happen.

From Oklahoma's standpoint the become another big school in a conference full of big schools. Instead of having the top 1 or 2 recruiting class in the Big 12 their class is 7th or 8th in the SEC. In exchange they get an extra $5 million or so a year in tv revenue but the potential loss in other areas may offset what they gain. Take a look at Missouri. Their basketball attendance is pathetic because fans have lost interest. Football attendance is down and they are 1-10 in the SEC over the last 2 seasons. They get a fat check from the SEC once a year which makes the administrators and contractors happy but that doesn't tell the whole story.

I suspect what will happen is ESPN will force Texas to play nice and drop the LHN in exchange for a Big 12 network when the current deal expires.

Newell, I sincerely hope you are right. I've heard this view before also. We'll see I guess.
If you were running for President, I just might vote for you, in THIS election. ;)

It's a Longhorn Network Problem. It was the problem from the start and still the problem today. It's why Nebraska and Aggie left and why eventually OU will leave if nothing changes with it.

I'm glad the Big 12 didn't cut into the pie by adding 2-4 teams that don't move the needle. The best thing that we can hope for is to somehow figure out the LHN issue and the Big 12 stays together. I think deep down OU and Texas both know that the best for them to make the college football playoffs is in the current Big 12.

In the meantime, I hope we get substantially better at football over the next 8 years and continue to grow our fan base if D day comes.

I don't understand this thinking. The conference will survive if UT and OU stay, and it will die if they leave. No possible expansion candidates currently available are going to change that. All of the expansion teams currently available will dilute what each team gets in terms of revenue. For the foreseeable future UT and OU will be in the ballpark of big 10 and SEC revenue and have access to the playoff if they win games.

Somehow people have this idea that we can add Houston and Cincy and somehow the conference will survive. These teams bring nothing in terms of national interest. In the case of Houston they bring nothing in terms of local interest. Once UT starts winning a few games all these Houston fans are going to get their baby crap orange gear back out of the closet and forget Houston even has a team.

what I don't get about TX, is that since they have $15M more than everyone, why don't they just go hire Saban for $12m a year and win the next 5 national championships? Or hire Calipari or someone else and win in bball too?

OU and TX just need to hire better coaches and win more games and then everyone will be happy.

TV sucks. Just make on online subscription and run it yourself. Give me a break these freeking rich people are so damn cheap when it comes to things that should be common sense. Drop TV, and do it yourself.

We are G5 if UT and OU leave, with or without expansion and no teams available would keep them here if they want to go. No reason for us to be for expansion.

LOL - back in the good old days I remember my uncle who farmed North of Newell had an antennae with a motor on it and he would turn a dial to get the antennae to rotate and point at either Sioux City or Des Moines depending on what channel he wanted to watch - and many times you just watch whichever channel you could get depending on atmospheric conditions. One reason I still listen mostly to radio is because that's what I grew up listening to due to tv being unwatchable most of the time.
