Of course there are a handful of programs that are highly regarded when it comes to developing NFL players, and Iowa is one of them. However, this is because Iowa has a lot of guys in the NFL (some drafted, some not).

ISU on the other hand has very few, not because of our name, but because we've had very few players that are capable of playing at that level in our program in the past 10 years.

The bottom line is that for this to change, we need to recruit better players.[/QUOTE]

I have always been amazed how many bowl games we've gotten to (not opening a debate on how good/bad bowls were) considering how little NFL talent we have - to me that is an indicator of good coaching.

Ok guys, how about this one. Last year Colin Franklin wasn't invited and that Hawk TE was.

If you guys don't think that the name of the program matters on who gets invited, I don't know what to say. We have to get to that point as a program

Iowa's game-day coaching is suspect, judging by their talent the last two year and barely reaching .500 with an average schedule

The NFL knows what they are doing. O'Connell Jr graded out better than Tyler Sash in every pro-day category--lifting, sprints, shuttle, and 3-4 other deciplines, yet one is in the NFL and it ain't O'Connell. Same with VandeVelde vs Lamaak. A fine line between making it or not

I think there are a lot if college players that can excel on the nfl, but they never get the chance. Players at iowa get the benefit of the doubt for some reason, they've had a few really good players, but most of their players that go into the nfl are no better than good players on any other team. Julian Vandevelde?!? among many others gets drafted? Seriously?

I bet we would get more players drafted if we had more NFL talent on our teams.

Seriously though, I don't think our players our getting overlooked because they're from isu. Just not that good...

Only Johnson and Osemele will be drafted. If I was an NFL HN those are the only two I would draft. I think some people are overvaluing Hicks.

Iowa had Gettis and Zucivecs (sp?) invited. I don't think they are any better than Hicks was. It definitely matters what program you are coming from. Iowa has a tradition of sending quality lineman to the NFL. Iowa State and CPR have to start doing that as well. It will help a ton with recruiting
Zusevics is projected as highly as a third round pick and is a consensus top ten OT.

I've seen Zusevics as a rounds 4-6 guy.

Bad example. Tyler Sash is awful. He is a decent special teams guy but he cant even get in at safety when the giants had like 8 DB's on the IR. O'connell never got a chance even though he was more physically gifted than Sash because Sash is from iowa and had the better career (Albiet the luckiest player ive ever seen). You dont have to have good ball skills to make an NFL punt coverage team.

Franklin later had a couple of pro tryouts and did not meet the master requirements.

It's not b/c he was good...

Yeah, I mean, just look at all the crappy players that get invited to the NFL combine. It obviously has nothing to do with talent and everything to do with program reputation...

FWIW, Hicks and Benton were both given grades of 30/100 by espn.com's draft evaluators.
