I saw a story recently that said the fat man has turned his life around and is trying to be a better person. I say give him a chance if he's interested.

I agree, but it seems like some people don't buy that story. People can change, and if he really has then I say bring him on. We are Second Chance U after all.

I just don't see the coach K love over the Mangino option.

Coach K Option: Promotion from within a program where the offense has been a dumpster fire for 5 years. His claim to fame is as an OC at Nevada where he had a QB that was head and shoulders above the talent level of the league.

Mangino Option: Developed a potent offense at a non-traditional school at the Big 12 level with talent similar to what we typically recruit in Ames.

Sorry, don't see how this is even a decision. If you can get the big man, you hire him. Coach K with Kapernik at Nevada proves nothing to me. We aren't going to recruit the next Vince Young or Johnny Football to Ames. And defenses in this league are a different animal as well. Mangino has done exactly the job we are needing to do. He is a proven commodity. Coach K is much more of a gamble, and given that we lost big on our last hire I don't think we are in a good position to gamble if we have any way to avoid it. A bad hire here, and the next pink slip handed out will be for CPR.

Sounds like whoever Rhoads hires a good portion of cyclone fans won't be happy.

Sorry your reasoning behind this is not well research, Kapernik is not coach K's only resume piece, for one he is the only OC to lead the the nation in both passing and rushing, both at Neveda. Read his cyclones.com profile there is a lot more to him.....

I would be thrilled to death with Mangino and think promoting from within is just as disaster in the making, as I said it would be with Mess. I know that Mangino did interview at Florida but is not likely to get the job. The thing I love is that he had great offenses with quartebacks who proved to be "just ok" in terms of actual talent. I am always wary of offensive coordinators who made their name with a superior quarterback. The fact is, Kaepernick was FAR too good of a QB to be playing at Nevada and playing against that competition on a day in day out basis, but it sure made Klenakis look good. We need a guy that has taken non prospect QB's and made them excel.

Mangino took Todd Reesing and won an Orange bowl. The only thing Todd Reesing is quarterbacking these days is a bar stool. They made their hay throwing to Dezmon Briscoe and Kerry Meier - meaning he was throwing to maybe slightly above average receivers, not superstar first or second rounders. I don't even remember who their RB was. Mangino took average or slightly above talent and put it together to produce a one loss BCS Bowl champion team.

Coach K could do a good job. I surely hope the rumblings of K and/or Sturdy taking over the offense in the KU game and the second half of WV were true, as the offensive output was night and day better. However, that was against two bottom of the conference defenses as well.

Truth. God knows I am not excited about promoting Coach K. After last year, I find that promotion almost the same as retaining Messingham. How do you not fire Messingham mid season if Coach K is someone you've always been willing to hand the offensive keys too?

This only reinforces my point. He had this success coaching a mid-major in a league where his team was likely equal to or superior to their weekly opponents from a talent perspective. This is a totally different task from what the OC at ISU will be facing.

Mangino won a freaking Orange Bowl at KU, and nearly had an undefeated season along the way. They had an offense that would have scored 100 against Nebraska if they hadn't called off the dogs. And he did this in the same league we play in today, with talent at a similar level to what we recruit. The only thing you could add to his resume to make him a better fit for this job is if he was the OC at ISU 8 years ago and averaged 40 points per game.

Where they love the governor
It might be nice to have a national coach of the year on staff.

Like this guy?

I think Mangino would be the better hire. Klenakis would be fine as well. People are giving Colin K too much credit. Who do you think coached him to that level of play? They don't become professionals on their own.

this is precisely why imo the people that think CPR is not on the hotseat at all, that he
has TONS of good will, support and capitol with "bigtime boosters" and could even
conceivably slip up on this hire and get 1 more redo in 2 years are beyond clueless.

DMac was let go because the fanbase had become divided, and that is -exactly- what
we are beginning to see happen here.

I don't know anything about why CPR really promoted CM nor do know if it had something
to do with being pals as some here have alluded to, but I know this, (as does CPR and everyone
in the AD)

AD JP is a great guy and all, but running the AD is a business, and this thing needs to be
turned around sooner than later. CPRs priority going forward is going to be all about
getting the best coach this time, personalities, buddies, ALUMNI, and "our" likes, dislikes, etc etc etc be damned

and that's the way it should be.

I would say that about 90% of NFL players make it there on pure talent. Kaepernick is an athletic freak and was widely regarded as the most TALENTED QB in the draft. Put him up against crappy competition and that just isn't fair. How many guys like that do you see turn broken plays into highlight real plays, it happens all the time.

Mangino exceled with Huepel, White, and Reesing. Not sure you will find many scouts saying those guys were uber talented.

Kap is like Mike Vick. They can do some pretty neat stuff and are tremendously talented but I don't see Kap being an elite QB. He has played pretty mediocre this year.

Compare Coach K's resume with Mangino. No one in their right mind would want Coach K over him. Even if Mangino is an *******, there are plenty of very successful ******** in the coaching world.

RGIII is down this year, is he not Elite anymore?

He might never be as good as he was pre-injury. You have to do it for more than just one year to be elite.

Add to it that he will probably have a new coach and new system and he could end up being pretty mediocre in the future.

Mangino may be a huge ****, but he earned some goodwill with me with this:
