A proven offensive coordinator? Why would we want that? Yuck.

Yeah, and ran the spread yet didn't have his QB getting killed every play. Took KU to a BCS game. What's not to like?

Hasn't Mangino publicly stated he's not interested in the OC position at ISU? I could swear I read that somewhere; maybe the DM Reg, or Ames Trib?

Chris said it here:

Mailbag: What should Rhoads look for in the next OC? | News | Football | Cyclone Fanatic

CarlHungus writes: Do you have any insight on who has the best chance at being our next offensive coordinator?CW: I do not have any insight on whom the guy will be but I do have a few names whom I do not think will get the job. Those men are former Kansas coach Mark Mangino and former Iowa State/NFL quarterback Sage Rosenfels.
A source told me two days ago that Mangino would not be interested in the gig.

I don't know if we want or get Mangino, but I would be behind the hire. As I have mentioned before, he stands to learn as much from Paul Rhoads, as we have Offensively from him.

All due respect to Clones Confidential link and the Brian Voss article. Those incidents happened over a period of 23 years. I am sure that every Head Coach has offended some players and is not universally liked. I don't excuse Mark's behavior, but EVERYONE makes mistakes. Most were when he was HC at KU and the pressure and his ego got to him. Despite these shortcomings take a look at KU's program with him and without him. That speaks volumes as to his ability to lead.

I would be willing to give the guy a chance. I doubt we see Mangino and I think Kleinakis/Sturdy get the job, but let's not pretend that Mangino would not be a gigantic leap forward on the Offensive side of the ball.

I would be thrilled to death with Mangino and think promoting from within is just as disaster in the making, as I said it would be with Mess. I know that Mangino did interview at Florida but is not likely to get the job. The thing I love is that he had great offenses with quartebacks who proved to be "just ok" in terms of actual talent. I am always wary of offensive coordinators who made their name with a superior quarterback. The fact is, Kaepernick was FAR too good of a QB to be playing at Nevada and playing against that competition on a day in day out basis, but it sure made Klenakis look good. We need a guy that has taken non prospect QB's and made them excel.

FWIW i'm good friends with a guy on the team and he said he's been hearing some rumblings that Mangino may be our next OC. I know this contradicts Chris's report but I just thought that I would share what i've heard because I sure hope it's true.
Your friend probably heard it from someone who heard it from someone who heard it from someone who read it on CF.

I heard the same rumor this morning from a returning player. When ask for details, the reply was "it's just a rumor around the weight room" - I wonder if the players get any real info.

I enjoyed a good Mangino fat joke back in the day as much as the next guy. But let's give the guy some credit for dropping a whole person from his tally.

He has a horrible track record when it comes to the way he treats his staff, his players, and his fellow human beings.

Well, it's a good thing we wouldn't be hiring him as a head coach then. It's ok to have a few ******** on staff, especially when you have a "players coach" for a head coach.

If Rhoads wants him on staff, who are we to say that he's a "terrible players coach"? or terrible to coach with?

Yeah, but we're talking about personal opinions here. Obviously you and I have no control over who gets hired, but the question was asked about the poster's opinion, not CPR's.

If they hire Mangino then they definitely have to bring back Bolt. We'd have the largest coaches on each side of the ball!!

I big part of Manginos issue at KU was that his basketball loving AD hated him and Mangino returned the sentiment.

They were looking for any reason to get rid of him and probably blew any impropriety out of proportion.

We saw a similar situation with Texas Tech and Leach.

I think having him as an OC is a completely different situation. You won't have the same amount of pressure as being a HC and he will have plenty of check and balances with the other coaches on staff.

I would love this hire. He might not be a real nice guy but he is an offensive genius.
