Did anyone else see the video of a 19year old Maryland student get beaten by police after a Maryland NCAA tourney win? The video shows the student skipping down the sidewalk right up to a police horse. The kid stops, obviously not wanting any trouble, and actually looks as if he was willing to back away when he sees he is now face to face with a horse. Then, with little to no warning, three police officers beat the living **** out of the kid with their nightsticks. To make things worse, the police report actually claims that the kid punched the horse, thus making it assault on an officer. The video CLEARLY shows no wrongdoing by the student. This kind of stuff makes me sick. The last I hear an officer had been suspended. That is all.

I saw the video yesterday on CNN. Pretty disturbing stuff. The kid was doing NOTHING wrong.

I firmly, firmly beleive after seeing enough videos similar to this one, hearing enough stories from friends, and reading enough actual stories in various media outlets that a sizable minority of police officers would be criminals themselves if they weren't in law enforcement.

Before I get jumped on, I do think the solid majority of cops are decent, upstanding human beings with a strong sense of justice and duty, but it's stories like these that really upset me.

Yeah thats pretty obvious. Those officers should be locked up.

I agree with this totally. It's not that all cops are bad/abusive of their power. Far, far from it. It's just that an unacceptable # of them are.

Agreed. Actually, its similar to the priest abuse cases... the vast majority are fine, but there are a small number that have been attracted to the job that have no business being there. And both organizations have had a habit of covering their own rather than eliminating the problem.

On another note... if only we had this kind of video available for the start of the 2004 riots that showed the people who got maced who were doing nothing wrong as well.

I agree 100%. my wifes coworker's husband is a cop and I'm pretty sure we will see him in a video some day. So much agression in a little mans body, I am 99 percent sure the reason he chose to be a cop is to get back at the world. Every time we get together with them he makes sure to tells me about how he would use his stick to take me down and what holds he could use on me to render me useless. I always come back with dude your 5'7" and maybe 150 lbs I am 6'7" and 270 lbs and I'm pretty sure your one stick swing you would get off would not take me down and there is not much you could do when I am sitting on you giving you a wedgie. He gets pretty peed off when I come back with that one because I'm sure his childhood was full of it. The guys own wife can't even stand to listen to him talk his tough guy talk and just now leaves the room.

I think there needs to be better screening with whom they allow to be police officers. There are guys given that badge, gun, and an incredible amount of power who are absolutely dangerous, and should never be in that position.

Maybe if there was a way to sort of funnel people who have served honorably, and a had a good record in the military into these positions, rather than some guy who just got picked on in high school looking to get back at the world.

They should receive criminal charges, but most likely will get off with just a civil lawsuit that the taxpayers will have to cover all because they are protected by the badge.

Like I always say, ANYONE can be a cop. ANYONE. It's not like you have some special power of good vs. evil to make you a cop, or make you BETTER than the general public. You are a cop, you are here to keep the peace and make sure people follow the law.

Actually anyone can not be a cop. Any kind of past trouble with the law or drug use makes it very hard to become a cop. That alone disqualifies a large majority of applicants each time around at a department. Any kind of past history of depression or counseling also disqualifies a lot of applicants. Even if an applicant passes all the physical and mental tests, a lot of people will still get flushed out in the academy. You even have people that make it through the academy and then get out on the streets with their field training officer, only to discover that they can't do the job.

However, I won't deny there are people out there who should not be officers or became officers for the wrong reasons. You can find bad apples in every profession though. There are also some poorly operated departments out there.

I normally tend to reflexively side with the police, because I know how idiotic drunks can be, but that video looks really bad. Not to mention the repeated shots once incapacitated.

In the real world, if you are fighting and have clearly subdued an attacker even, you are supposed to stop.

Those police should get that treatment and see how they like it.
