There appears to be some smoke regarding Painter leaving Purdue for Mizzou.

Not sure why he'd want to leave from a school perspective. Seems like a pretty lateral move, if not a downgrade to go to Missouri.

I just don't see it happening. Purdue is a better job in my mind, unless Mizzou is going to pay him handsomely.

I don't know how anyone would think Purdue is a better job than Missouri. While Indiana is down in the dumps, maybe, but Indiana will come back and then Purdue will be second fiddle in the state (maybe third, but Notre Dame is a football school). Missouri is the only thing in the state of Missouri.

If it were the 90's and we used your theory for football, would you not go to Florida because Florida State and Miami are better in the state?

I hope that doesn't happen. I would like to see Quinn Snyder redux

Probably an agent trying to get a raise for his client.

Most likely.

When I first heard about Painter I dismissed it as impossible but now I'm not so sure. From what I understate Painter and his AD don't have the best relationship and even though Painter's contract was renegotiated last year his guaranteed salary is only 1.3 million. That's pretty low for a coach as accomplished as Painter. Missouri was willing to offer Anderson 2 million a year guaranteed base salary and would be willing to offer the same to Painter. Also Matt Painter is familiar with the St. Louis area from his time at SIUC.

I still think he will end up just getting a raise and staying at Purdue. He is from Indiana, Purdue is his alma mater, and Keady brought him back from SIUC to be the head coach there. But you never know. He would be a home run hire.

If Painter says no I hope we turn to Cuonzo Martin. He is currently the head coach at Missouri State. He is from the St. Louis area, was an assistant for 8 years under Gene Keady and Matt Painter, Keady's coaching tree so far has produced Bruce Weber, Steve Lavin, Kevin Stallings, and Matt Painter, he is supposedly well liked by the AAU coaches, known as a good recruiter, Missouri State has improved each year under him, he's young, and his teams play good defense. On the downside he has only been a head coach for three years and hasn't yet gotten his team to the NCAA tournament.

I feel old seeing Cuonzo Martin as a head coach.

Here is an impressive interview/speech from Martin that has helped convince a lot of Missouri fans that he would be a good candidate for the job.

I just heard on ESPN radio that he is set to take the job tomorrow, so maybe this story has legs.

A little more smoke about Painter to Missouri. This is what a Purdue fan posted on Tigerboard.

"Painter to Missouri looking more and more likely

A guy on our board who is usually dead-on with his information is reporting that it looks likely, although not quite a done deal yet. He's holding out slim hope of Painter and the Purdue AD working things out but it would be very unlike our AD to cave on something like this.

From what we're being told, Missouri's offer is 2.5 plus incentives and I can't see any way we'll come close to that. It's not that we can't afford it but it would be extremely out of character for our AD to give someone that type of contract. He just doesn't believe in it.

This guy also thinks that the differences between Painter and Purdue's AD go beyond his salary and are such that Painter would've gone to Missouri for less than what is currently being offered.

In short, I think you guys are going to get Painter in a right-place-at-the-right-time type of situation. It doesn't make sense to most people in the basketball world and even many here on your board have been questioning why he would. Should this go down, it is almost entirely due to the poor relationship between Painter and Burke. Missouri is certainly doing its part by making an offer that would be hard for him, or anyone, to turn down but don't think this is just about the money."

Someone was pretty confident in this move happening. His Wikipedia temporarily said he's the current head coach at Mizzou.
