I would put Ejim's jersey in the rafters just for his angry hard screens he used to set.

To my knowledge, all of the jerseys in the rafters now are retired numbers.
If/when Ejim, Niang, Monte get the call, would those numbers be retired? Or just "honored"?

#3 and #11 obviously have been back in circulation. No one has had #31 since Georges.

The numbers up in the rafter now appear to be retired.

Nobody has worn them since at least 2011 (and yes I've been tracking this).

#3 has been popular even after Melvin...

Clayton Custer
Hallice Cooke
Marial Shayok
Tre Jackson III
Tamin Lipsey

#11 has been popular after Monté (and Jamaal Tinsley for that matter)...

Talen Horton-Tucker
Prentiss Nixon
Dudley Blackwell
Tyrese Hunter
Kayden Fish

Nobody else has worn #31, but that is sort of an awkward/unpopular number as it is.

Plenty of people have been wearing Fizer's #5, too...

Jake Anderson
Tavon Sledge
Cameron Fowler
Hallice Cooke
Merrill Holden
Lindell Wigginton
Jalen Coleman-Lands
Jazz Kunc
Curtis Jones

I'm embarrassed that no one in the student section didn't have a blow-up picture of this.

The only year that Ejim was the best player on his own team was his senior year. And even that was debatable even though he won big 12 player of the year, a lot of people thought Kane was better that year. It was close.

It’s not an insult to say that yes he’s one of the all-time greats at Iowa State, but no, he’s most definitely not worthy of rafters.
What the hell kind criteria is only the best player on his team his final year?

Sig talking about UNC having "retired" vs "honored" got me thinking.

What if you had a lower standard for "honored" players, and instead of putting the jerseys up in the rafters, displayed them around the concourse? There's isn't much decor on those walls.

That's were you could put guys like Niang, Tinsley, Homan, Stinson, etc. You'd need some kind of criteria I suppose, or if there's too many, you do a couple decades per year and rotate it.

UNC has two standards.

"Retired" jerseys must...

AP NPOTY, Naismith NPOTY, Wooden Award, Sporting News NPOTY, Oscar Robertson Trophy

You essentially need to win national player of the year from a reputable source. Iowa State doesn't have anybody like that. But they do have a standard for "honored" jerseys...

Member of gold medal Olympic team
MVP (as voted by his teammates) of a national title team
First/second-team all-American
ACC POTY
NCAA tournament MVP

By that standard the list of guys in the rafters should be...

Waldo Wegner (second-team AA)
Gary Thompson (second-team AA, Big Eight POTY)
Zaid Abdul-Aziz (Big Eight POTY)
Jeff Grayer (second-team AA)
Marcus Fizer (first-team AA, Big 12 POTY)
Jamaal Tinsley (second-team AA, Big 12 POTY)
Melvin Ejim (second-team AA, B12 POTY)
Georges Niang (second-team AA)

Current jerseys in the rafter who would not qualify...

Jeff Hornacek (HM AA)
Fred Hoiberg (HM AA)
Barry Stevens (HM AA)

Neither would Monté Morris (third-team AA)

Couple other HM guys not otherwise mentioned...

Jack Flemming (third-team AA)
Dean Uthoff (HM AA)
Andrew Parker (HM AA)
Dedric Willoughby (HM AA)
Curtis Stinson (HM AA)
Craig Brackins (HM AA)
Royce White (HM AA)
DeAndre Kane (third-team AA)
I like looking at honors, particularly that those outside the program provide. There's a ton of bias for things like the era.

In general I think it's weird to supposedly have such an exclusive group and let nobody in, yet have a couple guys that were one-time HM AA and never won a CPoY.

I agree with this. Ejim was a good player, but I don't know about "hang the jersey" good. To me, Niang and Morris are no-brainers. They need to revise the rules, as times have changed and 4 year players are few and far between. I don't think that players good enough to go league in 2 years should be excluded because they didn't take some online courses. It should be Fizer, Tinsley, Niang and Morris.

My vote is all the jerseys up there are just the jersey retired. I’m not sure anyone has enough to retire a number. You can also do a hall of fame type wall that is a third level.

Didn't realize 10 years as had to pass. So in Melvin's case he's basically a first ballot ISU HOF which he absolutely deserves. Think a few more ISU MBB players will join when their 10 years has passed.

My favorite part of this are videos of pollard notifying inductees. Did the athletic department do it for this year's group?

I don't care when we do it, just that we get it done. It is a recruiting advantage that kids see something like that and know that is possible for them should they come to ISU.

This stuff kind of reminds me of the Troy Davis arguments too (so many factors to consider when trying to name "the greatest" or worthy.

Appreciate some folks pointing out some that are up in the rafters are statistically (and probably less winning percentage) than some of the other names mentioned. It stinks it seems there is no TRUE set criteria that has been followed (for the past guys).

Many have also pointed out the new era of bball make some of these tricky. What if we took a grad transfer that had two years left (graduated in 3 years) and took us to a natty? Or, what if Tamin continues to follow his trajectory and after next year leaves (and of course after a final four this year and natty next year). So many scenarios.
