Now that I review the field for that tournament, Iowa State should kick the s*** out of it.
FAU and A&M will be tough next year and likely Top 25 teams.
Valid. When I typed my comment in reaction to FAU completing the field, I got into a sports-volatile mindset.
So I'm dialing back a bit — no cakewalk for ISU to win it, but should be considered a favorite.
Perhaps along with FAU; they held onto Dusty May and as far as I know they return almost their whole roster. I don't think they've lost anyone to the portal.
Just realized, at least according to my notes, initially the TBD team for the tournament was expected to be a MAAC team, so FAU definitely adds bulk to the field as a whole.
Making it all the way to the Final Four will do wonders for a previously obscure program. Good on them.
Yeah that can pay some swift dividends.
You know what I could see happening next season? FAU has good enough season/schedule to land a 4 seed, then loses to a 13 in first round.
this is why im not concerned about our non-conf schedule strength. Most, if not all, of the games we play in this event will be Q1 games. Add that in with the Big 12 slate and were just fine.
Why not just increase the number of conference games then? Just call them conference games and start them then.
From the mid-1940's to mid 1970's Big 7/8 teams played a pre-conference tournament in KC between Christmas and New Years.
Could be fun to have a Nov tournament where Big12 teams compete against each other. Or maybe the next evolution of conference challenge games. Have 4 Big12 and 4 Big East teams compete in 3 game guarantee tournament to kick season off or over Thanksgiving.
Exactly what I thought. I wondered if I was misunderstanding something about the concept.
Probably would be some pushback on games that early factoring into a conference title when that time of year teams are still mostly working through early season stuff by playing low majors
