My point isn't about Morris's turnovers or how good his handles are, but in how he is wasting time at the beginning of possessions when there is a press of any kind. Isn't one of our main strengths tempo? Needlessly slowing things down like that plays into the defender's hands.

If I am correct you are suppose to take it easy in breaking the press. Look it over, figure out what they are trying to do and then slowly break it so you don't turn the ball over.

What is up with threads this weekend? Seems like we've had 3 or 4 candidates for dumbest thread of the year and it is only early January!

Feel like I can just hit random buttons on my keyboard, hit post, and come up with a more intelligent thread than half the **** that I've seen yesterday and today.

Do we really have to be mad at something after a win. Enjoy the ride.
I'm happy we won, but since that wasn't the last game of the season, why act as though there aren't ways we could get even better? To get better, ISU should focus on what it can control instead of what it can't (e.g. bad officiating, which was a big factor yesterday). A big reason we won yesterday was Nader playing exceptionally well and having a lot of shots fall. Those things will not always happen.

With that said, our tempo may not necessarily loose us games either. I'm really just wondering why we would want to slow things down in certain man situations (1:1 at 2/3 court) and would rather us push for tempo and to try and draw blocking fouls.

That may be what was going on - a way to try and reduce turnovers. I feel that Monte in particular, though, could blow by his defender and/or draw the foul. Thomas not so much, don't really like to see him bring it up in the first place (obviously foul trouble caused some of that).

Sure things can always get better. The thing is this team handled that press very well for the most part. If you play a press too fast and turn the ball over tempo doesn't matter.

Not sure what you are advocating here, but it appears instead of attacking the press as ISU did and potentially getting transition points off of 3/2 or 2/1 situations, you would like ISU ballhandlers to dribble straight ahead without hesitation and run into their defenders potentially getting foul calls as a result.

The most common method to beat a press like WVU's is to have a ballhandler in the middle of the court, have one guy on the left near midcourt and one on the right near midcourt, and then have the other two guys shift to get closer to the ball. Obviously you never want to get trapped, so if the ball goes to the sideline, there needs to be a quick pass out or the ballhandler has to get out right away.

The last thing you want to do is make a quick pass into a trap or dribble into a trap. Go back and watch the game again, most of the turnovers we had against the press were because guys were trying to rush up the court and make long passes. Work the ball back and forth and take your time. The press is meant to speed the game up so I'm not sure why OP is advocating for trying to outrun the press.

I thought we handled their "Press" pretty well. Unfortunately for those "toothless wonders," the "bum" happened to be "da bomb!"

That was my favorite play of the game. WVU gaining momentum, the crowd is going wild, and Georges gets the ball on top. Goober McGoggles starts clapping in his face because he is going to shut him down, but Georges "Bum of the Game" Niang drives right by him and makes the spinning layup. It was perfect.

Cool. I'll be telling Morris this right after I get done teaching Mike Trout how to swing a bat, Jeff Gordan how to drive, and Fred Hoiberg how to be dreamy.

Maybe it's becauae WVU players were pushing the entire game and getting away with it. Since the refs would let WVU basically molest us, it makes sense why Morris and Thomas did this. That being said, Monte and Thomas know way more about basketball than you ever will, so who are you to tell one of the best point guards in the country and another competent dribbler what to do?

I really hope Georges does the same thing to Gathers on Wednesday in Waco.

At least the OP didn't demand to see Man-Man "sweat". By that standard, we're making baby steps as a fanbase.

And as long as I'm opening old wounds........LET ME MAN-MAN BRING THE BALL UPCOURT!

Glad we got some time to learn how to play against that kind of defense without costing us a W. Our ball-handling forwards will help, but we need one of the other guards to help Monte out. In hindsight, we probably take a juco pg in last year's class.

Yea, I mean Trey Dickerson was right there for the taking!

The purpose of a press is to get you sped up. I'm pretty sure the strategy you've just described of bringing the ball up the floor is speeding it up. Anyone who has ever played basketball has learned you beat the press through the pass not through the dribble. All things considered, I thought we handed the press well, and when we didn't it was because we got sped up.

I agree. Stupid Monte... taking a second against a hand checking, grab and hold press to assess the situation instead of just yelling "MOOOOONTEEEE MORRRIISSSSSS" and running full speed into defenders in some feeble attempt to "draw a foul."

Get a new TV man... clearly the one you have doesn't work.
