He started out as "Johnny Cougar" because his manager thought it sounded better for a rocker. Needless to say, once John established himself, he eased away from the "Johnny Cougar" and went to "John Cougar", then "John Cougar Mellencamp" and finally to "John Mellencamp." Yes, I watch WAAAAAAAAY too much VH1.
