I think one or maybe even both stay. Maybe it’s me being optimistic but I really feel like one of them will stay. Not sure who I feel will be the most likely to stay. Maybe both!

If they hadn't played as well as they did I could have bought that pre-game. With both playing well in an big "exhibition" game I am thinking they are both gone. But one or the other coming back would be pretty awesome and I'd pick Butler given the chance.

Bringing in a top 250 kid who plays RB, that is top 250 of all kids playing HS ball in the US. Just a guess but he might be very good.

The recruiting ranks is saying that ISU is bringing in higher caliber athletes.

Look at Rose there was concern about filling the linebacker role. Kid comes in and plays great.

If you hired the right staff should be nothing to worry about

It seems to me that Randy P is focused on Cyclones leaving early for NFL and NBA.

I get the thinking, however wasn't Lazard viewed the same way a year ago? A year ago Butler was the bad hands guy with potential. It will suck to probably lose two junior stars from the same team but maybe if we hire an offensive coordinator (what P5 team operates without one?) and improve the OL we will be okay. It's not like we lead the Big 12 in scoring or anything even with these guys.
ISU will never lead the conference in scoring. Not how this team is built. A make them drive defense, good special teams, and a grinder offense. That is the plan.

I am concerned that next year will be disappointing without them. I don't see us challenging for a conference title without them, unless several players REALLY REALLY step up. Someone cheer me up and convince me I am wrong.

Nope you're right. We'll struggle to score points from here on out. In fact, I'll predict CMC won't even be able to fill the open scholarships. All hope IS lost and this program will die a meaningless death in 2019.

Curious though if you happen to have good seats you'd sell me since the end is near for you?

Purdy is to blame for some of that. Butler is a freak, no denying that. But it seems Purdy is not as comfortable throwing to the other guys.

Milton disappeared once Kempt went down.

Purdy forced a lot of passes to Butler that should have gone elsewhere. Butler returning or not, I suspect Purdy will be better distributing the ball next season.

I wanted to pull this line out of your paragraph...

Kyle started 1 game and went 21 for 31 for 160 yards.....

That game he had 3 catches for 31 yards.

With Zeb who started 4 games technically. OU, Akron, TCU, OSU (1 series or so)

7 catches for 34 yards

With Purdy 7 games started and OSU game included

24 catches for 352

Yeah... production went way down after Kempt got hurt... WTF

IMO an improved offensive line will make replacing Butler and Montgomery much easier. If you have a good o-line an average running back is more than serviceable. Outside of the o-line, I think that the area where we need to improve the most is special teams.

I took a look at the OL recruiting. Looks solid, with 4 3-star HS OL recruits. Linemen usually (with some exceptions) take a couple of years to mature into the position, so I'd feel a little bit better if we took just one JuCo OL. I don't like recruiting JuCo's for the most part, but one or two per year to be able to play immediately is OK.

Monty and Butler don't need to be 99% of the Offense nor should they be. However, it was clear this year with the guy calling plays is that Monty and Butler is all he knew.

Next year could be a disappointment if Campbell is calling plays. However, we have the line and players if the play caller changes next year. We'll see

This is bad in so many ways. Butler and Montgomery were not 99% of the offense, but coaches do tend to use their best players more than others. That's how this works. How else do you think Butler and Montgomery put up the numbers they did? Remember that the guy who was calling plays also replaced Noland with Purdy and proceeded to win 7 of the last 8 regular season games. I mean, he must know something about running an offense. I don't know, maybe that's just me. I am curious to know what you would have done different to get a better result than 8-4 and a trip to the Alamo Bowl

This is Brock Purdy's offense for the next 3 years! With the way Heacock has the defense playing, even average offense should get you 6-7 wins a year. Contending for a Big 12 title falls on Purdy and the play-caller's shoulders.

Way up there
The Lazard/Butler leaving impact isn't really a good comparison. Butler was a much bigger part of the offense this season than Lazard was last year. Receiving stats were pretty balanced in '17. Butler's % of the teams yard and catches was much higher. Idk if it'll be harder/easier to replace but it'll be a different situation than the staff dealt with replacing Lazard. I'm expecting a lot more balance and an increase in RB/TE usage.

I'm MUCH more concerned about the offensive line than those two. Both will/could be big losses but we'll have other guys who step up. We had this concern with Lazard last year and Butler was the guy that stepped up. We don't have another one of him but we could easily have a couple of guys fill that hole.

But until we get a better O-line, we are going to struggle to score more than the 20-30 ppg we have been.
