Had a strange late afternoon. We found our neighbor dead in her backyard across our alley. It was so...strange. I haven't ever seen a dead body in the real/ongoing world. Hospitals and stuff yes. But life going on around, cars driving by and people walking dogs. It was just...so sad and surreal. It's also nearly 100 degrees and she was definitely in the sun all day from the looks of things. She had the garden hose in her hand and the backdoor was ajar and tv was on. Likely she just went out back to water plants/flowers in this drought and either had a heat stroke or heart attack on the spot. Have you ever found a person deceased before?

Not me thankfully but easily could have. My neighbor was checking on another elderly neighbor and had forgotten to call her for a few days. She went over first and found her on kitchen floor and was not a pretty situation. Coroner came out believed she had been deceased for 48 hours or so. Glad I don't have that memory......

I didn't see it but a few years ago on a float trip at Apple River a 25ish year old in a group our group was hanging out with passed from a brain aneurysm while floating. They initially thought he just dozed off from drinking all day. There were apparently no signs or health problems leading up to it.

Not if CPR was performed correctly, 100% the worst on an elderly person, as a teenager also? No thanks

There weren't specifics I think watching someone drown if you can't do anything about it sounds horrific compared to finding someone who already died, or doing everything you can to sustain life with an 80 year old and they still go.

2 days after I had ACL surgery I was moving pretty slowly in my yard when the neighbor showed up wondering what happened and asked if I needed anything. Seen my yard was needing mowed and offered to do it. I told him that would be great and went in the house to lay down and rest. Heard the mower and then it went quiet. Figured he was done but when I look out yard was half done and he was gone so figured he quit to have lunch. I hear a knock on the door and it was his wife saying Jesse wasn’t doing so good and asked if I could come over. Walked in and he had passed. Pulled him off the couch and did CPR until ambulance showed up but he didn’t make it. Felt guilty as heck letting him mow. Ya that sucked

Agree to disagree, with a drowning I would imagine it’s sad and you have a sense of dread but you’re pretty distant to it, especially if it’s a stranger. With CPR it’s obv hands on and you can feel and hear the rib cage crack/break. Plus it’s a neighbor so someone you have had some interaction with before.

Just my two cents though, everyone responds to different trauma in different ways.

This brings back memories from long ago that I had forgotten.

One summer during college I was hired to be a temp “duty ranger” at a state park.

A camper hung himself and was discovered around 6am if I remember correctly. Since I did “patrol” or last check between 1-2am; I’m confident I was the last person to talk to him (or one of the last).

He came to camp alone and put a note into his duty/payment envelopment that was discovered in the Dropbox the next day.

Luckily I didn’t discover him/witness the hanging; however, for a long time I always wondered “what if” and if I could’ve helped him.
