Soenher is not a FB. He is our best blocking TE and thus lines up sometimes in the backfield as a blocker or a slip out receiver. He will NOT be getting a handoff.

Hasn't it been mentioned in the off season that he would fill that role too though?

We aren't going to have a running game until we commit to having one and that is 100% on Manning!!!

Manning right now seems to impatient with the running game, like 3-4 yard runs aren't good enough. 3 - 4 yards runs should be good enough, those are like gut punches, eventually they take a toll and then you bust a big run.

Lang was running good 6 carries for like 36 yards, I'll take that average everyday, give him more carries. Which leads me to - quit rotating RB's (and WR's) so much put your best guys on the field. A RB can't get in a rhythm if he is constantly running in and out of the game. Our RB back rotation reminds me of Iowa Basketballs rotation, which is ridiculous.

I love Purdy but we don't need to be throwing 45 times a game.

This is pretty spot on and goes along the lines of how the staff goes away from something that's working.

The 3-4 yard runs are also in line with the check down to the RB. There's nothing wrong with making the next down be more manageable. I know they're the villain, but it's hilarious watching the Patriots every Sunday simply throw it out to James White over and over again because it works and gets a few yards.

The called plays/routes actually tend to look OK, but the ball is getting out about 2 seconds late a lot of the times it seems. I think many of the WR and RBs are at their best with making plays after the catch...why not let that happen?

Couple points, Jirehl Brock I thought ran it once 4th and one and got stuffed. Baylors defense looked really good, great closing speed and looked to have more horses on defense than ISU does. I haven't seen a QB get that beat up in a long time, Purdy was getting killed, seemed like every other play. He's a tough SOB. I swear a couple times I thought they would need a shovel to get Purdy out of the ground.

That run play took way too long to develop. No, we didn't have a great line surge but you can't ask those guys to hold blocks that long against a goal line package if you are going run the ball right up the gut.

The two best backs averaged over 5 yards a carry. The problem isn't the backs. There was room to move. It was throwing the ball 50 times. If we keep running and make them commit to stopping it, we can be more effective throwing. We need to take what the d is giving us

This was my biggest frustration! The staff never gave the run game a chance in the first half and I can't figure out why. We essentially allowed Baylor to drop 8 all day long...

We wisely want to go as Purdy goes, but we’ve got to find a way for the run game to support Purdy and Purdy support the run game. Right now they’re seemingly in conflict which each other.

Exactly. Having the patience to establish a run game will enhance Purdy's effect.

Didn't we started the Baylor game with like 6 straight passes? That set the tone for how the game was going to be called.

Wisely? Not at all! We've shown that we can run the football pretty effectively. This team is NOT built to be a pass first offense. It just feels like TM gets way too impatient with the 3-4 yard runs...

My take away after 4 games

We have two wins against lesser teams. One a FCS team D2. One against a team that had no business playing us. We need to start beating some good teams and not making up reasons why we lost like To much heat.

This October will be interesting. Yes, the last two years they've been great in October, but both came with a pretty significant change in the offense. '17 it was Kempt in a qb with Lanning also getting many snaps, which kept the defense on their heels. '18 it was replacing kempt with Purdy, which added a whole new dynamic to the offense.

What, if anything, happens this year to spark the offense? They have got to do something, because the current play calling is too predictable, and with this oline, if they continue to drop Purdy back in the pocket, he will get hurt.

Iowa St's current offense is not nearly good enough to line up and play basic football all game. They have to make a personnel change, or come up with something gimmicky, or non-traditional, to keep the defense on their heels.

Personnel change would have to be along the offensive line. If they're so high on Ramos and Downing, then get them in there. If Real is as athletic and fast as they say, then get an offense package for him. Why can't you use him for short yardage situations, or in the red zone? Give the defense a different look.

How is 4 games into it a knee jerk reaction? That is like saying WIlliams wrote this using a knee jerk reaction.

A knee jerk would be right after the game. We are two and two with our only wins being against lessor teams.

So if we are viewing 2-2 with wins over UNI and Middle Tennessee state or whatever that teams name was as being a great start, we are miserable a holes or can we look at what it really is and say we should be 4-0 with wins over Baylor and Iowa as well? I guess moral victories are thing now with Iowa State. I thought we were past that.

I think what stuck out to me was the toughness of our players. Our receivers were getting hit hard as they were catching the ball and yet they hung on to the ball and got up for the next play. And the whole team coming back from 20 points down in the 4th quarter to take the lead. I really admire the grit and determination and talent of many of our players.

In the end it was a 2-point loss because their freshman kicker who had never made a kick before of course nails his first try against us. And as CW noted, we failed on two FG trys. All those defensive stops by our Cyclones in the 4th quarter took a toll by the end of the game and we just did not have the strength or energy to stop them a final time. So, it's a loss but I am still proud to be a Cyclone and support the team and staff 100%. Can't fault the effort, these guys hit it hard, every yard.

What are you talking about? I never crap on Iowa State. I have been an Iowa State fan for 45 years. I have seen it all. Go ahead and be ok with 2-2. I think we should be 4-0 and have no played to our ability. Maybe go start more threads with the rest of the people saying "We were the better team" and "The heat on our sidelines was hot". Ill stick with win the game or shut up.
