Riley just wasn't a winning coach. His record at Oregon St was so-so at best - good years to be sure, but then the last 5 years overall he was under .500. Maybe he lost his fire, it happens.
Still surprised they hired a guy that wasn't hammering out W's consistently.
I think they wanted to go for a personality that was the opposite of Pelini and hoped that with Nebraska resources that he would have more of his good years than his bad.
I'm pretty sure I remember when he was hired that Riley supporters were saying, "Look at the good things he did at a place like Oregon State. With the resources of Nebraska he should be able to do much more!"
And he was even able to bring in higher rated recruits, but it seems like his scheme did not work the way he planned and his coaching hires did not pan out either.
