Need a new TV

My 10 year old 42 inch Toshiba has started getting really funky with colors and am starting to see a lot more pinks. Think it's on the way out and the Best Buy guy tells me I did good to get 10 years out of it. Want a replacement in the 42 to 50 range. Have a Roku- so not sure I really need a Smart TV? 1080 HD is what I like and while I have cable now, will likely go to airwaves/stream/DVD in next few years,

Best Buy guy really likes the Sony, but I think it's hard to go wrong with Samsung? I am a value guy, but want something decent that I won't regret buying. Ideally I buy something this weekend, but have no problem being a little patient. Looks like should be able to find something under $500 pretty easy?

Advice? Suggestions?

I have a toshiba and a samsung. The toshiba buries the samsung for sports, but the samsung has better overall quality for other things. The reason is that the toshiba I have was built for sporting activities. It has a high refresh rate and they put the money towards that and sacrificed a little on the other parts, whereas the samsung put their money towards what makes the general overal viewing better.

Find out the little things about the tv's like refreshing speed and stuff that like (been a few years and can't remember all the important features) and use that info to shape your purchase.

Big thing is, about whatever you buy, it won't be a downstep from what you have unless you go used or something like that.

I'd recommend a smart tv. So much easier to have it built in.

Whatever brand you go with, I'd recommend considering one of the new 4K UHD TVs, especially if you are getting something closer to 50 inches than 40 inches. 4K is the wave of the future, and if you are planning on owning this for another 10 years, I'd recommend going that route, especially since the premium you pay for a lower-end 4K really isn't that much anymore. In general, Samsung, LG, and Sony are going to be your more top-of-the-line TVs, but they are going to cost the most too. I'm a Samsung guy myself, but one could easily argue LG might be the leader right now on the technology front. However, that technology war is really only seen on their highest end TVs. If you do want to stick with Samsung and get a pretty good deal right now, they in general are selling off cheap last-year's highest end SUHD TVs now since their newest high-end technology is their OLED TVs. However, those SUHD are still amazing TVs with very high-end lighting and picture, and nothing to scoff at.

Do you have a Sam's or Costco membership? You can pick up a quality TV at a really good price if you time it right. I bout a 55 in LG Smart TV there about two years ago and it was less than $500. Might be worth a look if that's an option for you.

I thought the same thing but the last Samsung I bought shelled out in less than 3 years and it was pretty top of the line at the time I bought it. I don't necessarily blame it on the brand as most of these are built to be disposable now, but nothing is fool proof.

Sounds like it's bigger than what you're looking for, but I got a Hisense 65" 4KUHD Smart TV from Sam's last Thanksgiving for under $500 and I've been very happy with it. I don't have a membership so a friend of mine got it for me.

Not real familiar with Hisense, but the few reviews I have seen on them have been positive.

Budget? I am a big Samsung fan, but the last 2 sets I bought for bedroom TV's were Vizio. Probably the biggest 'bang for your buck' out there.

I personally hate the Smart TV trend. I've never seen one that comes close to being as good as a standalone Roku or the like. I'd consider the TCL for the built in Roku, but I've never used one or known anybody with one.

4k is overated in a lot of situations. I have a 55" 4k TV and my chair is about 12 feet from the screen and there is not a bit of difference between 1080p and 4k. On the other hand, I have a 1080p projector downstairs with a 120" screen and I think 4K would look a lot better even with the seats 12 feet away.

There was such a big improvement when we went from 480i to 720p/1080i but from here on out the differences are pretty minimal imo.

Also, I just saw a sale on this TV, which ranks pretty high

I picked up a 4k M Series Vizio (60") and besides the obvious resolution bump, it has just as good if not better picture than any 1080p Samsung I've owned (black levels, contrast, etc). Would definitely recommend a Vizio to anyone looking into a new TV.
